It's OK going from neutral to 1st and then up the box. Going down is OK until it gets to 2nd then on occasion it won't go through neutral to 1st gear, it feel like it's in 1st but it's still in 2nd. A couple of attempts and it'll find 1st.

Any ideas?

Bent the fork, or need to adjust the clutch cable?

No cable, but I've just replaced the clutch fluid, and the bite point feels a little further out.. Would that cause a problem?

How would I bend a fork?

if you just replaced the fluid, is it free of air completely? That's where I'd start.

Frank is referring to the shift fork, but they are pretty beefy on Guzzis, so much I've never heard of one bent. Worn, yes.

I'm pretty sure there's no air in it but I'll have another look at the fluid in the next few days. Thanks.

Iain, as John says the location on the spline of the gear level is critical as are too the linkages. I had dirt in my linkages some time back and this caused a similar type of issue - worth a look, especially if you had the lever off the shaft!

The shifting linkage is OK, I cleaned and greased it a few months ago when I had the side plate off for the swing arm bearings. The shaft through the plate, which usually ends up sticking after a while is OK too.

That was a few months ago. Something has changed that is preventing the shift. Go over everything you have done. Both the clutch fluid and the linkage. Something recent is the cause.

I found two things, it could have been either or a combination of both, but I'm glad it's not something internal to the gearbox.

When I changed the fluid and replaced the resevoir top a small amount oozed out. I had over filled it and screwing the top down pressurised the system moving the bite point further out on the lever travel. I didn't come across any air in the system when I bled it sgain and made sure the fill level was correct this time. The bite point now feels to be where it's always been. I also checked the gear lever shaft through the plate and found it was getting a bit sticky, this surprised me as I haven't done many miles since it was last cleaned and greased, las time it lasted a couple of years before needing doing. A bit of oil has freed it up completely and I'll take the plate off later this week and do a thorough job on the shaft and linkage.

It's all good now and shifting as it should.
Thanks everyone.
Iain
