After receiving my new clutch cable (see clutch cable failure posts) , I have installed the new cable ( thanks Cory).

Something just doesn't feel right. The lever seems much stiffer than I remember. Has anyone installed a cable on a V7 and if so, a few pointers would be appreciated.

The adjuster at the transmission was also loose so I am starting from scratch for set up.

Adjust the tension on the cable at the clutch. Slide the rubber cover away from the lever and down the cable (you may have to peel it back a bit as well), then loosen the fastener resting against the clutch assembly. Then adjust the cable until you find the play you had before (screw towards the clutch for more play/away from the lever for less play). Adjust it just a little at a time until you have what you want, and then re-tighten the fastener to lock your setting into play.

I've found with these newer V7s that you don't want a ton of play, but also it's not going to benefit you to reduce the play too close to zero either.
 
Increased resistance sounds like a kinked cable or at least more turns than before. Make sure the route is the same as before or with the least number of turns. Watch the routing around the forks - test turn L/R to full lock. Check the OM, the adjustment procedure as I recall is:
1) adjust the screw behind the trans so that the lever is about a 1/4" clear from an obstruction from behind.
2) Take up the majority of cable slack at the adjuster along side the trans, and
3) Do final free play adjustment at the clutch hand lever to spec.

Have fund on your run - I have to walk now - knees beaten to death by ... running over the years.
 
Probably a bit late to mean much, but did you lube the cable before you installed it? You need to lube new cables with a cable lube before you install then,. It will at least double the cable life and smooth the cable travel and lighten the required lever pressure. I use Dri-SLide on mine. It works well for me and I've been using it for 40 or 50 years. There are other cable lubes out there, It really doesn't matter which one you use as long as you use something. If your motorcycle shop doesn't have any, try bicycle shops. I got my last Dri-Slide off Ebay. A can of it will last for many years!

Cables can be lubed on the bike.
Get a "cable lube" tool from any bike shop, less than $10 in OZ.

Just need to remove cable from lever, lube and replace.
 
The cable feels much better after several rides.....almost like the original.

Didn't know about lubricating the cable. I use a aerosol Teflon lubricant on my boat. Would this work??
 
Can't hurt!
Some cables used to come with teflon liners in the housing.
