Chronic Starting Problem

Hi, all -

I have not been on the site in a while - partly because I've experienced several years of unreliable starting on my 07 Norge 1200. The issue is not the battery. I've gone to great lengths to clean the leads - they do show sulfate buildup that has to be scrubbed off. Sometimes the bike will just "tick" but not turn over. Sometimes it will turn over but not start. Sometimes it will neither start nor turn over. But sometimes, after topping off the battery and scrubbing the leads with a wire brush, it will start. Only a couple of hours later, probably not.

Speed's in Elkridge is working hard to solve the problem, but so far, no solution. We've ordered a new starter and starter relay.

But I'm thinking that the problem may be in the battery leads or in the electrical harness. The bike is kept in an underground garage, where it can get moist after rains outside. I'm frequently surprised at how much crud appears on the battery leads after even a short time in storage.

I'd be grateful for any recommendations. I love the Norge - when it runs - but that now is uncertain, at best..

Thanks -

Bob

Well, you can do this: ;)
file.php

Sorry Bill :D

or call Todd H. and order the MPH solution:

Well documented here. Guzzi foible for the last 30 years. Too many power take offs from the one circuit causing a drop in current. Relay bypass, do a search.

My Bellagio would do the same, engine earth lead moved 2" to a bigger 8mm crankcase bolt, most problems cured.

As he said, it has been covered fairly extensively.
There are more than a few threads on starting issues.
The solution seems to be reducing the voltage drop when you try to start the bike. If the ECU sees to low a voltage when it tries to start the ECU will abort the start attempt. Newer bikes you supposedly can override this "feature" by holding the start button in. But I would assume your '07 is the same as mine and doesn't have that ability.
If you are local to Speeds, I am two blocks from Speeds and could show you what I have done to resolve the issue on mine.
I did not have a problem until I replaced the battery a while back. Then it would sometimes not start. It was more likely to not start for me when cool, but it was hard to predict. I went with a better battery and also changed the power feed for the starter circuit to reduce the voltage drop.

Had a mates Norge do the same thing, first long ride he went on.
Checked the connections, swapped the starter motor with that on my Sport all to no avail.
Then looked at RH side switch assembly (where starter button on Handlebars located) to find it over packed with whatever grease they use (conductive??). Cleaned it up an then it started & has continued to do so without an issue.
worth a try also.

Search for the startus interruptus thread, it's all in there.
There have also been cases of the starter solenoid sticking due to the grease they assemble it with getting dry and sticky. Solution is to remove solenoid, clean grease off plunger etc and lubricate with oil.

yup search "startus interruptus"
There is a relay yout need to add a direct power wire to from the battery.
