This topic is really directed to the lads in Canada. Very soon I shall be flying into Toronto with my wife for a two week touring holiday, I'm hiring a car at the airport (Chrysler 200 sedan) she wouldn't entertain a bike :(
We are staying in Toronto for 3 nights with my mates sister, and then we go to Kingston, Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa and Niagra on the lake. We have two nights in each place with pre-booked hotels.
What I need to know is information about driving on your roads, the toll roads, speed limits and how strictly are they enforced. Is parking the car a big issue in the cities, is car crime a problem?
My friends sister doesn't own a car so she doesn't feel qualified to advise me. Also any advise on sightseeing would be appreciated.
cheers, Alan (fatal)

You will likely be driving hwy 401 to all the eastern distinations - that is south of the airport pending if you go that direction after picking up the car. The 401 is 6 lanes east 6 lanes west thru TO including express lane etc. Expext to do 75MPH during mid day late evening otherwise it could be a aligator crawl at rush hour. Converting kilometers to MPH - multiply the posted speed limit by 0.62 and that will give you a ballpark figure of what the US norm is. Everybody drives 10 over in the center lanes 15 over in the express lanes. Once out in the eastern burbs of TO (oshawa whitby area) the lanes decrease to evenually 3 and then 2 furhter east.
Leaving a vehicle in the streets depends on the area - Islington area is a hazard to your health at anytime of day - north york is moderate - scarborough (east end) iffy. Do not leave any items of value or interest inside or leave the car parked in the same location for long periods as it wll be targeted - common anywhere.
Going to Niagra you will likely take 427 and that may be a toll hwy now. You can take the Gardner Express from downtown as it runs along the lakeshore and then turns into the Queen Elizabeth Way - again expect heavy traffic - stop and go during shift changes. To avoid that program a GPS to get out of the city via back roads such as Steeles AVe - Dairy Road and take those all the way to Hwy 6 - Some really nice country side to see and a few conservation parks on the way. Milton will be a place of note - my old stomping grounds.
You will pass by Hamilton over a bridge that crosses the narrows going into Hamilton Bay and see all the steel smelters off to the right . Don't breathe for at least 5 minutes.lol
Once past Hamilton its clear sailing all the way to Niagra.
But yeah just go with the traffic flow and you'll be fine.
If you want some phone numbers in case you get bored let me know LOL

One thing to consider is Canada is much bigger then people realize. Many times people look on the map and miss judge the distance and think it will only take a couple of hours when in reality would be double. Toronto and Montreal try to travel through non peak hrs and be careful of Quebec drivers they are a little more less cautious
.
