Hello,

My name is Don from TN, long time "observer" owned this Griso from new. It has a little over 11,000 miles on it now. There has ALWAYS been a noticable noise in the left head since new, but after reading about these engines, I dismisssed it as normal. It has always run awesome, never used any oil, and always been reliable. But, last night, on the way home from work, I noticed a louder noise from the left head. It sounds like it is coming from under the valve cover. I pulled the valve cover and noticed, after getting the engine @ TDC on suspect cylinder there was considerable end play on rocker arms. Nothing else stood out. I am going to pull the right valve cover tonight and compare.

This seems to be the place for great technical advise. Hopefully someone can guide me in the right direction....

I was wondering........ can we adjust the end play in these rocker arms (as in the 4 valve BMWs)? and if so what would the specs be?

Thanks in advance for any advice,

DonHo

I am assuming the end play you are talking about is the tappet clearance. That play is normal (and needed) at TDC as long as it is in spec. Have you measured and adjusted the clearance? I beileve the spec on your bike is 0.10mm Intake and 0.15mm Exhaust. Sounds like you have a gap that is too big, most likely exhaust side.

I don't believe he is describing a valve clearance issue, but cam end play. Pete did mention that with the early 8 valvers the end play is not adjustable, on later engines the cams are shimmed to reduce the noise. If the left side end play has increased but the right hasn't there is something going on that needs attention such as a failure of the cam box, but he will have to take measurements of the end play to be sure.

Actually, I noticed, what seems to me, a lot of rocker arm end play.....the rocker arms are sliding back and forth on the shaft an excessive amt. I haven't really checked valve lash yet, it seemed a little excessive last night when the engine was still hot, but don't think it was excessive enough to cause the noise I was hearing. With that being said, I do think the noise was in a valve "rhythm".

I guess the best thing to do is to compare it to the "quiet" side.

I really was thinking the 2011 models had the cam issues sorted out.

The bike has me addicted to it and I just want to get it fixed and keep riding it. I think it is a "long term" keeper. : )

I see some comments on the cam box....are they common to wear out this quickly on this particular engine???

Well,

I pulled the left cam block, then the cam. I guess the problems was not resolved by the 2011 model year. The intake cam follower is pretty much eat away....The cam is not as bad as some I have seen on the forums, but it is bad enough that it will need replacing.

I have also read that the newest engines have roller rockers, does anyone know if they can they be installed in this engine?? Is there, dare I say, some kind of aftermarket solution?

Just a little disappointed,

DonHo

Don,

Go to this thread https://www.guzzitech.com/forum/190/11851 A kit will be available from the factory for the conversion. You will see the reference on the second page.

Call RidersHill in GA (706 864-7777) and ask for Ian in parts and service...
Guzzi already has a roller kit out to retro fit your flat tappets at no charge so you're OK.

Thanks guys!

I researched through this forum and I know there were a lot of issues. I really thought that they were sorted out by the 2011 MY. I did talk to riders hill and sent them some pics. They're going to talk to the piaggio rep and get back with me. HOPEFULLY I can convert to the latest style cams and followers without too much problems it seems like this is the proper solution.

Thanks again for the info!
