5 Month Ownership summary

These "covers" will be placed over the tappet covers and fixed in-place with ???? It is lined with graphite heat resistant strip.... It just needs to prevent the cold air flowing over the tappet covers, thats it. Will report back if it works.

So is it silly of me to think I can buy a Stelvio and not have problems? I know I need to address the mirrors/blinkers, driving lights and battery but if I do that do I have a good shot at owning a trouble free motorcycle? I am not a very good mechanic but really love the Stelvio and am trying to decide between it and a Super Tenere. My brain says get the Tenere but my heart says get the Stelvio.

I honestly don't think there is any big issue's with these bikes. It has two big cylinders doing the jigery boo between your legs and that causes problems at times with bits coming loose....I personally haven't experienced that. We (cold crap climate owners) seem to have a problem with what we suspect is condensation in the oil (formed around the tappet covers) possibly affecting moving parts if left un-treated for to long...it's less severe to a degree than it sounds and maintaining it is not to much of an issue...also some of the bikes 2008-2011 were affected by a batch of soft cams which is where all the issues with cylinder heads stemmed from. The model your'e looking at has roller tappets and therefore seem absolutely trouble free....if you can point a screwdriver at somthing you can maintain your guzzi without the need of a dealer..they are bloody easy to maintain!...
You find Pete in this forum and speak to him, he's our "go-to" person for all things technical and he has seen a fantastic track record with mg's.

The one thing I still love about this bike is the sound it makes... My mate has a GS and he is green with envy by the sound the twin makes.....blipping and racing like a loopy teenager through tunnels is still something I struggle to shake.... :p

While I do recommend that people change their oil more frequently than the factory suggests, especially if they ride a lot in cool, damp weather, many don't and simply get their bikes serviced 'By the book'. I'm sorry but neither I or my customers seem to be able to kill ours!

What mileage oil changes do you recommend Pete? I just changed mine at 5,000km (first change was at 1,500km per the manual) and wondered if I was being a bit excessive? I did not change the filter this time - will do that at the recommended 10,000km change.

While we are on the subject of doing our own maintenance (which I like to do) will I be in breech of the warrantee if a dealer does not do the basics like oil changes? I use the recommended Agip oils. I will still take to my dealer for diagnostics and any ECU upgrades and a general look over - but does a dealer need to do all the in warrantee servicing? Or is that a conversation I need to have with him to cover my butt?

Bike developed massive oil leak today....also check tappet covers today and after 200mile since last service, has become covered in water contaminated oil. I've had enough. I have now had 16000 character building miles over the last 10 months or so and no more. I'm selling the Stelvio and buy a Honda.

Pity it's come to that Farway but sometimes you need to move on for your own sanity. Murphy's law: the next owner will do 300k trouble free miles. When I bought my Quota 1100ES I had a lot off issues that took a fair bit of sorting out in the first 10,000km - drove me nuts. I have not had any problems in the last 50,000km. It seems to be the way with MGs.

Alan.
You are probably right in what you say there but this is my only transport, my work tool, there is nothing else. ..the constant un-certainty does not help the cause!!...if you'll excuse me, I've got a Stelvio to go dismantle

Hi Jack

You certainly gave your Stelvio a fair go, if mine had been as troublesome as yours it would be going too, good luck with your next bike
