Got on the Stelvio this morning to go to work. Bike started right up fine. No issues. Stopped about a mile up the road for gas, filled the tank, and put the key in, turned the key, normal cycle of tach needle, idiot lights etc. Hit the starter button and nothing. No click, nothing.

Took the cover off the fuse panel up in the fairing, wiggled the start relay, checked the fuses under the seat, pulled the 30 amp fuse to reset everything, Still nothing.Battery is strong, lights are bright.

Any ideas?

Possible the main relay or starter relay. Does the dash stay on after attempting to start? I didn't think the headlights would be on unless the engine is running. Have you confirmed battery voltage?

I think I know what happened. I have only had the bike out a couple of times so far this Winter/ Spring and have been using my heated gear which all tolled is pulling about 150 watts.

While I was fueling, I left the gear on and I think it pulled just enough amperage to not trigger the relay. After it sat for a while and recovered, it fired right off.

Maybe I should think about putting that jumper in afterall.

Plugged it into the Battery Tender when I got it back to the garage and is definitely pulling a charge.

Thanks for the quick response though!

The Stelvio has been pretty bullet-proof if the leads have been kept clean (without the relay mod), but it can't hurt. Also, how old is the battery?

Battery is only about 2 years old.

I think the combination of a long really cold winter in the garage and leaving the heated gear running while I was refueling is all it took to knock it below the needed amperage to trigger the relay.

Once back at the garage, I plugged the charger in and after an hour, it was still charging so I suspect that it only had a top charge and not a good deep charge.

I've never had this issue before because I usually ride quite a bit through winter, but just haven't been able to this year.

Mine also has been very reliable electrically (and mechanically) so I hesitate putting the pigtail in over this one incident.

I'd charge it fully, and have it load tested. 2-3 years is about the normal lifespan on most AGM batteries these days. I haven't had to do the relay mod on any Stelvio to date.

Sounds like the battery was low. You only went a mile before stopping, this would not be anywhere near enough to replenish the battery after starting, and if you left the heat load on too while stopped, the battery would probably have been below the starting threshold.

Another lesson for us all to learn.

Last year I took the bike for its MOT (annual government check for those of you not in the UK) which it passed, of course, but as I went to start up and ride back home - Bikey no Starty.

The mechanic and I crawled all over the thing and found it had blown auxiliary (front box) fuse B (15A, second from front, right hand row). This one covers the turn signals and STARTER MOTOR! :x

Two weeks later I went to Italy and took a dozen spare fuses, just in case. So she behaved faultlessly for 3000 miles!

Hope this helps...
