Fitted a rear hugger a while back, a pressie from my wife! Recently received a pair of Givi pannier frames, and went to try them in place on the bike.

Trouble is, when the hugger was fitted the muffler had to be spaced out a little so it clears the hugger. Now it is too wide to allow the left frame to fit!

It looks like I need a smaller slip on muffler, or to remove the hugger and rig up a flap from the air box to protect the shocker.

Decisions, decisions!

Ray.

Smaller(louder??) muffler sounds like the better option.

but I have seen on the 1200 Multistrada's some guys did that only to have the hot exhaust gases destroy their panniers/number plates. Not that the Stelvio is the same but keep it in mind when you try the mod.

I agree, smaller muffler - saves weight (lots!) and sounds awesome. And the original makes a unique garden ornament.

Also my Mate's Multistrada's right pannier has a humungous heat shield to save it from the exhaust gases which blast straight at it!

Reditch eh? I also have an Enfield bullet 500, Indian though! ;)

New muffler is the option I would go for too, but it took about 4 months for my "financier" to ok the purchase of the frames!

Just in case I get the go ahead, which muffler would be recommended, without spending a bomb?

My Quill Evo is ace, sounds so good I've never taken the baffle out, cost £200 and is in Warrington. Job Done (Although £200.00 - 5 years ago...) The torque is smoother and stronger 3-6000rpm. They have a Dyno-Pro. When I took mine in they hadn't had one before so they used mine to make the link pipe and gave me a free dyno - but only after, not before. On the ride home however, it seemed stronger all round.

Tucks in and looks good too. My pillion daughter complained of heat from the original at her ankles, but no probs with the Quill. 90bhp & 72 ft/lb at the rear wheel. And then, please fit a K&N air filter. Wow.

Did the K&N require any attention to the fuelling?

Hi
I had to shave about 1cm off the silencer side of my hugger just in the vicinity where the exhaust mounting bracket is. Works fine with no fouling now. Sprayed it matt black and you wouldn't know anything had been done to it.

Regarding the heat you mentioned I've tried two variations.

The first was to fit a new exhaust, a MIVV Speed Edge worked fine and sounded good.

The second was to send the stock silencer away to Sabre Engineering where they removed the CAT. That area on the bike is a lot cooler and the bike seems to move better. Can't quote any figures for a HP increase but the motor feels freer and has a deeper sound to it. Sabre did a fantastic job I am really pleased with the result. I can give more info if interested. I have kept the stock on now as I like the way it looks and I do a bit of riding abroad and heard that some countries are getting tough on non standard pipes. Bit of a wolf in sheeps clothing now!

I have the MIVV Speed Edge for sale I paid over £350 for it, it is still VGC ( I would call it spotless but for a bit of 'rash' where the mounting strap fits). If interested e-mail me and we can sort out some details...no obligation of course. I can get some pics if needed

Unless you really like the look and sound (and heat created by)/of the stock muffler, my advice is to go that direction. Other is if you like the stock muffler, then remove the hugger and purchase a "shock sock" or eq.

To check clearance between muffler and hugger, does the shock come off or disconnect at the bottom to allow the swing arm to be manually raised, without dismantling the linkage?

Hi Ray
All I did was fit the hugger then take it off the centre stand and sit on it, bounce up and down a few times and then see where it rubs. Not particularly scientific but worked. I then trimmed the hugger just enough to create a clearance. Sprayed the hugger Matt black and it looks great. My hugger came with a 'flat head' Hex bolt to replace the stock one on the muffler. now that doesn't foul either.
Best regards
Nik

PS
I still have the MIVV Speed Edge available.

I recently fitted a pyramid hugger and found too that it rubbed against the OE silencer. I cut a strip approx. 1cm wide for about 8 inches (where I could see the rub marks) I used a Dremel with a cutting disc, I didn't bother to paint the edges of the cut hugger as you can only see it by getting down on your knees.

Ray I have a Quill Evo end can going spare, I had it fitted to my 2009 Stelvio. I'm quite happy with the standard set up on my 2011 model.
PM me if interested..... £85 posted. I'm near St Helens in Lancashire.

Hi Fatal, sent a message, don't know if it was PM. I may be interested in Quill, must talk to my "financier" , and have another look at clearances. Have fitted a mushroom head allen screw in place of hex one on inside of silencer bracket.

How do you send a PM anyway?
