Thank you very much for all the details but machining is way out of my league. I feel very lucky I can TIG/DC weld steel at home but there's very little I can do beyond that.

I fear the tappets are over-sized, yes. I am not very confident into my second or third (or even more) hand measuring instruments but I remained these were very close (to say the least) to the upper bound.
So far I won't do any machining into the block, yet it is not so...
Yes, afterwards I realized that the block is likely to expand more but ... so, I was able to insert them with oil but that was not "greasy" and no, they didn't rotate at all inside the "tube" - if rotating along their axis is well what you meant by spining - :(

I am having a long - yet enjoyable - journey rebuilding one Guzzi from the seventies.
I bought replacement parts from Stein Dinse back in the days they did not seem to stand much behind their products (example given : valve springs of too small diameter) and I am puzzled by the tappets...

I don't know what "main( bearing)" is, but I believe no manufacturer uses non standard bearings, those days. So should you, I'd say:
- I can't see any good reason why you should resign to machining one bearing yourself.
As (I hope I caught that) you wrote, machining an adaptor - as a "Z" plan...
Finally, the engine will be a 950 square fins one, from a California II. The engine shows excellent compressions and was trustily (by TLM, NL) claimed having only 50 000 km, approximately.
It was fairly unexpensive, but it doesn't look nice at all.

Well ... that sounds even better, but you should take the whole harness and especially any part connected around the ignition key, when in doubt - to enforce your chances of success.
I don't know much about Toyota practices, but I know for sure that anti-theft devices can be hidden close to...

Sounds like a great project, but did you ever thought about all the mess, er ... sorry : wiring required to fire a modern Toy engine ?
From my point of view, all that sounds feasible but if I were to do that, I would start by building a frame jig, buy a donor car - with a working...

Short rear fender with stainless steel hinge
and matching (pie cut, reweld) rear light / license plate holder - to accomodate the new fender slope

I saw I have many options, yes - including keeping the Bosch charging system(1) but I'm still not sure at which engine I would be better buying.
I found a cheaper 1000 Calif engine with a lower mileage. Less fun but it better fits my budget.
