Valeo starter problems - Cali 3

Hi all Problems with my 1990 Cali 3: Very weak action of the starter motor, barely able to turn the engine. Battery was old so I replaced it. Problem persists, in fact is worse. Now it won't even turn over. Battery good. Relay working. Solenoid seems to be engaging: A strong clonk comes when...

    V65 - Strange timing issue

I could under no circumstances make it run even near properly at 7 degrees as per the workshop manual - points gap dead on and lots of idle screw messing about. Now it starts and runs excellent at 22 degrees advance. Just seems strange Oh well. It runs Jake

    V65 - Strange timing issue

Hey all. Looking for input. I decided to look in to the timing of my V65C in an efford to cure a tendency to run a bit too hot. I found the timing to be way advanced. I set it to factory specs +7 degrees (measured both stativ and with timing gun) and found it was nearly impossible to start and...

    Idle jets - 1990 California

I have not yet checked rocker clearance - it does ticker away like I expect though Still one of the valves could be too tight (I do completely trust the Work of the PO) - I will bump it up on my list Thanks Jake

    Idle jets - 1990 California

OK. Maybe I just cut Them. I may even have some short tip ones from a phbh carb lying about - dont know about the lenght though Still - if you say it may be supposed to be that way, and that 4 turns isnt excessive I could just leave it as it is.. Thanks for all your help Jake

    Idle jets - 1990 California

Hi Steve It has a long tip - 5mm. Spring, washer and O-ring in place. The slides are 50/3 Thank you! I still wonder why it has to be turned out so far now.. the manual sats 1,5 turns - no idle possible at all before 3 full turns..

a way to test ignition boxes???

I'm sure you changed the sparkplugs first even though you didn't say so ;) Otherwise I would do standard black box test, i.e. switch suspect component but nothing else to other cylinder and see if problem also changes side Disclaimer: I have no first hand experience with motoplats Good luck Jake

    Idle jets - 1990 California

Hi Guys My California is running quite well after some tweaking. It is still not as smooth as my V65, even though the carbs are synced and ignition timing spot on (electronic). My issue is that I have to turn the idle mixture screws way out to get proper idle - 3,5 and 4,5 FULL turns...

Breather system, 1990 Cali, with pics

Thank you. Still I don’t like the idea of unfiltered air in my intake. But nice to know it is supposed to be that way If I bring it back to original state I guess I can put a small filter on the “exit”-hose Jake

Breather system, 1990 Cali, with pics

Hi there Recently aquired 1990 carbed cailfornia with some issues. Elictrical fixed and ready to go. Carburettors off for cleaning. It has the original airbox. The breather system does confuse me though: First image shows the fat crankcase breather hose going to the top of the frame. Also...
