I don't know if the 98's had this issue but my first guzzi a 2000 EV
had a non working tach. Turned out to be a bad ground wire in the wire harness on the right side of the bike by the headset behind the cover. I ran the bike and gently worked the harness saw the tach spring to life, from...

Re: intermittent engine cutout on 01 California - 4/8 update
I mark the body of the TPS and the throttle body. Sharpie or a kinfe

Re: intermittent engine cutout on 01 California.
I can think of a few things , TPS might be wet. the coil packs are visible so i would check there
both the High tension lead and the signal connector.

I have heard that a person should adjust the windshield when stopped or low speed.
Not at Highway speed to reduce the drag on the drive motor.
I know it defeats the purpose of an " adjustable " windshield to a certain degree but it sounds like good advice
Not sure how often you adjust yours I...
On my 02 Cali EV I run
Castrol 20w-50 petroleum base in the Engine
My 08 Norge I am running Mobile 20w-50 full syn. Sg rated oil
In the transmission and the final drive I run Redline heavy Duty Shock proof in both of them
the Norge has 1100 miles
the Cali 34,XXX
My bet would be the clutch
the guzzi has a dry clutch and slipping it like that going up a steep ramp feathering the clutch might result in that smell.
