Trying to identify cylinder thrust surfaces

Hi All, I've just finished rebuilding the cylinder heads on my 1984 V65. I have upgraded to the later single-spring valve arrangement and hope to put the engine back together tomorrow. Three out of 4 valves were leaking so new valves have been lapped in, the cylinders have been deglazed and...

The state of my engine internals - need some feedback here!

I need to take another look at my barrels, but yours seem to show considerably more honing marks than mine do. I'll take some pictures for your amusement - will make you feel better about your seized rings!

The state of my engine internals - need some feedback here!

I've been religiously changing the oil and filter every 1800 miles, as per the handbook's recommendation! I was actually contemplating changing the rings, and having checked the pictures I took of the compression gauge, I see I was wrong and misread it - I have 115 and 110 psi. So new rings and...

The state of my engine internals - need some feedback here!

Point taken. Yes, I've replaced the filter every oil change. How are you enjoying your V100S? Happy New Year to you too!

The state of my engine internals - need some feedback here!

The bores definitely have a glaze on them, but you can see a few hone marks here and there. Would you suggest having them honed?

The state of my engine internals - need some feedback here!

Thnk Thanks for the feedback - most appreciated! You say lapping - no need for cutting the seats? I was able to polish out the worst of the scuffing on one of the pistons, with less than 15 seconds with a Scotchbrite and some lubricant. I did measure LHS wrist pin and got a very even 19.998...

The state of my engine internals - need some feedback here!

1984 V65 SP 15k miles shown on odometer... So in preparation for upgrading the heads on my bike, to a single valve spring system, I pulled the heads, cylinders and pistons yesterday. I've posted pictures of both pistons which do show some ugly wear on the upper and lower (axis of thrust?)...

Correct way to check compression - 84 V65

So, that would be 10 (comp ratio) x 14.6 = 146 lbs/sq.in as an acceptable reading? Thanks Kevin!

Correct way to check compression - 84 V65

I now have all of the parts need to change out my valve springs to the later, small block single spring set up. Before I do this, I want to check the compressions, but have read a few comments on other forums that suggested the engine should be run for several minutes before connecting the...

    Weird electrical issue

OK - that makes sense. I did clean the connector blocks with electrical contact cleaner which worked...temporarily. Appreciate the input - Cheers!

Thanks John - that would be a good start!

    Weird electrical issue

1984 V65 SP I seem to have finally developed the legendary Italian electrical issues on my bike. Problem started off as an intermittent one but is now permanent. When I turn on the ignition switch, prior to hitting the start button, I don't get any warning lights on the dash - Oil Pressure...

V65 SP 1984 valve/spring upgrade to avoid dropped valves

Wow - that is very interesting and very thorough! Maybe the answer is a V65 inner with a Breva outer? I ordered as set of 4 Nevada (single spring set up & same part number as Breva) so I will measure the free length and see how it compares. I'm curious to measure the valve lengths when I pull...

V65 SP 1984 valve/spring upgrade to avoid dropped valves

Is that from your V65?? No - that looks like a hemispherical combustion chamber...

V65 SP 1984 valve/spring upgrade to avoid dropped valves

Looking for some guidance on the dreaded (potential) stretched valve issue on my V65... My cylinder head gaskets have been weeping quite a lot of oil so it's time to replace them. Given the possibility of the dreaded "valve stretch" that can result in dropped valve heads and the subsequent...

Draining and refilling oil-pneumatic dampers on 1984 V65SP

Draining and refilling oil-pneumatic dampers on 1984 V65SP

Hi All, It's a job I've been putting off as I've read it can be a tricky one with these oil-pneumatic forks. Does anyone here have a procedure for draining the fork oil, and refilling and the correct amount to put in? I don't want to have to pull them apart, but as far as I can tell it's been a...

    Leaky sump gasket 1984 V65

Interesting suggestion. I couldn't remember if there were even sealing washers on the sump bolts, so I looked at the Parts book and it doesn't show them on the sump bolts. May be a sensible upgrade if I can find some that fit.
