Is there a wise bod on this forum that can answer my wee conundrum?

I owned a 2002 California Stone. It was fitted, stock standard (back in 2004 with standard battery) with a 18Ah battery.
I now own a 2001 California EV80. As standard it was fitted with a 30Ah battery.

WHY??

They run at the same compression, both with the same Valeo starter motor, same size valves, same cam, same EFI and throttle bodies, same ECU, I have no more or less lights fitted as standard to either bike...why did Guzzi go from 30Ah on an EV in 2001 down to 18Ah in 2002? Both are loking nut, neither are hydro heads.

The reason I ask is because I'm looking at replacing my 30Ah boat anchor and thought to myself...surely if the 18Ah unit (which I never replaced on the Stone after 6 years of ownership and 38k miles) was fine, why does the EV have a 30Ah battery?? Can I just use a 18Ah? Adding to the conundrum is I was going to go to 21Ah Deltran LiFePO4 which should weigh a TINY amount compared to the 30Ah sealed lead battery I already have in there.

I'm currently going through the same exercise for a '97 Cali 1100i Anniversary model.

It came with a Varta 530 030 030 battery, which is rated at 30Ah. But the cranking specification is significantly less than smaller modern versions, so why is the battery so large (and expensive?). The mounting place for the battery is very tight, another reason for choosing a smaller battery.

I went with an 18Ah battery that specified for the Cali 1400. Just filled the acid a few minutes ago, so won't know for a day or so. If it proves unsuitable, then I have a spare for the 1400.

Mate. If it can turn over an additional 316cc that works at 10.5:1 surely it must be fine for our older Calis too. I'll await your results!

Cheers Dave.
I'm going with a Deltran 21Ah LiFePO4. I already have a Deltran charger for it as I used the same brand LiFePO4 in my V11 Sport and I know it works. My original 30Ah makes only 180CCA (!!) So the 360 of the lithium should prove quite enough. I know it's only 21Ah but they are deeper cycle so the effective capacity should be more than the 30Ah anyway. Maybe.

Hmmm.
Not good. I installed an UltraBatt 3 blade (18Ah total, 270CCA).

After turning the bike on, the fuel solenoid whirs and when i press the button i just got a big "clunk" from the starter relay.
Balls.
Yes, all fuses and relays are fine. This was a working bike up until yesterday and a daily rider.
Temperature right now is 15 degrees C overnight so it isnt adversely affecting battery output as though it were in a US winter. Voltage looks good.

Don't know whether to order another cell (24Ah and 360CCA!?) or investigate elsewhere...
