1100 clutch bleed help?

Hey all.

I just picked up an 07 Griso 1100. With 1200 miles on the clock, it was mothballed and turned into a parts donor. I've been slowly gathering parts/supplies as I work my way through rebuilding and cleaning this machine up. Hopefully it'll get used as a tourer and instruction bike at the trackday company I work for.

My current problem is the clutch. I've ridden cable clutch bikes exclusively, so this thing is exceptionally new for me. I can bleed brakes without issue, but I can't seem to get the clutch to even begin to disengage, even after flushing a full container of 5.1 brake fluid through there. Tried a Mity-Vac on the bleeder, then just the standard lever squeeze.

I had to buy a new lever and build a pivot and plunger to actuate the MC, but that doesn't seem to be the issue. I get fluid out of the bleeder when I pull thbe lever, so I'm not sure the MC is in question.

The bike came with NO fluid in the clutch reservoir, so I'm thinking its just a massive air bubble issue, but I'm not sure. I'm hoping someone here can steer me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance for any help!

First off I believe the recommended fluid is DOT 4. Since you can move fluid, and it has sat for some time, the slave cylinder may be frozen. My recommendation is to remove it and see if you can get the piston to move. Good luck as you may need to remove the swing arm, which isn't all bad as the swing arm bearings and shock linkage should be greased as well. Several posts on lubing here too.

Thank you for the info! I certainly hope I can get this baby to work without pulling the slave. I don't even have a service stand yet. :/ The MC has a barely legible "bad" written on it from what I'm assuming was the original dealer... But judging by the manner in which they removed the other parts, I don't want to trust their assessment just yet.

I was using the 5.1 for its compatibility with 4 and the higher boiling point. It just needs to be changed more often. Poor choice for a clutch?

Update for those who care:

The master cylinder was actually shot. After many bottles of fluid and hours of frustration, I took it to the dealership and had the MC replaced. It was moving some fluid, but not enough.

Now on to the custom exhaust!

Glad you got it working. I'd still stick with DOT 4. The clutch fluid won't get as hot as brake fluid. But if you like changing fluid, go for it.
