Help!, just bought a 1996 non runner, bike in good condition, spins ok on button (battery re-charged just in case), fuel pump works ok, all fuses appear ok, now what could be my problem?, all and any help greatly appreciated, Kwaksam

Check the engine pick-up sensor: check if its resistance is according to spec. I had a '97 sport 1100i and it once had the same symptoms. I can lookup the spec for the sensor but I think yours is a carbie isn't it? Dunno if they use the same pick-up sensor as the injected ones.

Hi Rob

Thanks for the reply, will check that, its an injection bike, cheers

Sam :D

Quick update, checked sensor, open circuit - no resistance, took it out and someone has been here before!, uho, sensor disintegrated as I pulle dit out , previous signs of super glue!, but just to be a pain, a piece of the sensor body plastic fell inside the engine case, so my next question is can I remove this front engine cover withoout draining oil!, I presume its what gets removed to replace timing belts/chains?

Oh dear oh dear oh dear

Drain the oil or you could have a big mess. I think I'd drop the sump pan too in case it failed while running. You may find bits of it there as well.

Thanks for that advice John, I try to avoid too much old oil on the garage floor!, hopefully I can reuse the existing sump gasket

Hi, got another query, I'm probably a bit dim, but on the right side of the tank is a petrol return valve, on my bike the main petrol hose is connected, but there is obviously supposed to be another smaller hose connected, presumably a vacuum hose of some kind, now where does that come from?

That return valve is the fuel pressure regulator. It is mechanically set to operate at a certain pressure. The small tube protruding from it is normally not connected. It allows to change the pressure somewhat at which the regulator operates, by applying a vacuum to it. Out of curiosity I've played with it in the past by connecting it to the inlet of the right cylinder but didn't find any change in running.

Thanks for the advice gents, the ol girl is up and running again, replaced the pickup sensor and she fired up, mind you it took two hours of picking small bits of the old sensor head out of the timing chain and gears!, now all we need is some nice summer sunshine
