1978 V50 oil leak

I have posted before about the 1978 V50 I picked up a while back. It supposedly only has 1500 original miles on it. I rebuilt the carbs and tweaked a few other minor things but I runs great. It does have a starter button glitch witch I am trying to work out. When I can get it started is runs great.

The main problem I have now is it is leaking quite a bit of oil. My theory is that it sat for so long and the gaskets dried out and now it runs fine but leaks a ton of oil. There is a small puddle of oil on the case under the air box. See my photos. Do I need to breakdown the engine and reseal it? Is this easier than a rebuild. With only 1500 miles, I am wondering if I can just replace gaskets and bolt it back together?

44 year old gaskets were guaranteed to leak. The bike hasn’t run for decades and the metal hasn’t expanded and contracted but every gasket has fused to its surrounding metal. It’s only logical that those gaskets are now literally tearing a little bit every heating and cooling cycle.

I wouldn’t plan an engine teardown but I would be looking at base gaskets, head gaskets, oil pan gaskets at a minimum. If the base gaskets haven’t started to leak, they will eventually.

If it was mine, when I eventually removed the cylinders, I would leave the pistons inside the cylinder, lowering them only enough to remove the wrist pin so as to leave the piston in place in the cylinder. Then you won’t have to worry about new rings and honing the cylinders, saving you time and money.

It is very rare that leaking develops between the engine case halves as this is really sealed well to begin with and the surfaces are machined and highly stable in their expansion and contraction.

Is that engine oil or is it from the gear box vent?
Did you replace the gear box oil and how much did you refill?
You could try attaching a hose to the vent to see if it collects oil.
Search the internet for remedies for this annoying vent.

Enjoy your ride, mate. This is not an issue, this is a feature of these bikes. And a dozen of other features, which don't affect the ride. These bikes will be 50yrs old soon, don't spoil your day detecting their gimmicks:)
