So my 1978 V50 with 1500 original miles starts easy, cold with the choke on. After reving for 2-3 minutes, choke off the bike runs smooth but if I let go of the the throttle it dies immediately. If I hold the throttle at 1200rpms it will idle indefinitely but as soon as I let go it dies. It seems to me that I have too much slack in the throttle cable. When I look at the cable adjusters on the carbs the housing end sits several mms out of the adjuster leaving the inner cable clearly visible. However the adjuster seems to be fully extended to max adjustment.

If I tighten twist grip tension screw on the throttle at the handle bar the bike will run great at 1200-1500rpms but then the throttle sticks at higher speeds.

It appears to me the problem is too much slack in the throttle cable but I can't figure out how to adjust it anymore. I have rebuilt the carbs and they seem fine at 1200rpms or more and while riding. I just have to keep my hand on the throttle at all stops or it dies.

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Not slack in the throttle cables. The idle is adjusted too low. Open the throttle and turn in the idle screws 1/2 turn at a time on each side until a stable idle of about 1,000 RPM. You may also need to adjust the mixture screw. Remember, only turn in the idle stop screws with the slides up, failure to do so will put a groove in the edge of the slide.

+1 John!! If you can see inner cable and outer sheath is up higher than adjuster cup that is unscrewed up to max of threads. THEN You need new cables. Make sure the chokes go all the way down when off. Should idle 1000-1200.
You might also check the timing to see if it's moved from stock.

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

STEPS:

1. Go to DONATE and kick in a few bucks to support the site. It will make you feel good and allow you access to the DOWNLOADS section.

2. Download the V35-V50-V65 manual.

3. Go to page 50-54 and READ! This will explain your carburetor and how to precisely set your idle speed and cables.

4. Smile. You did it yourself and you now have a high resolution workshop manual for your motorcycle for a few bucks of donation. Such a deal!
