Hi folks.

Not new to bikes or spannering but not worked on guzzi before. Used to electronic stuff on other bikes and cars.

Trying to sort out an intermittent cut out on a 1992 v65 florida.

Odd thing, not my cup of tea but it's for a friend.

It has factory electronic ignition. From what I can tell a two wire (inductive) pickup serves two separate "ignition control units " Or whatever you'd call them. As I can see these are fed positive from a common ignition live, separately earthed, each receive one wire to a corresponding coil (ground switched presumably) and each has one of the ignition pickup wires. There appears to be a black cylindrical capacitor at the end of the ignition live too.

So questions:

1. What's the role of this external cap? I understand the role of the capacitor/condenser in points ignition systems and in cdi systems, but what here? Is it to absord any noise on the low tension 12v wire from the coils?

2. Are these I.c.u.s handed? Presumably they each see the induced signal in different directions.

3. Any known problems with these? they look rather well ribbed for her pleasure. I know on btw airhead these similar Bosch ignition units overheated at times and benefited from a clean and light repaste with thermal compound. But they had a separate heat sink.

4. Is this a known issue or am I just chasing intermittent break in the positive to -ground from side of things with the ignition. This bike apparently cuts out instantly on both pots but will restart instantly . Doesn't sound like overheated shorted coils to me. Happy to be wrong.

Cheers
