I did valve adjustments, to 0.15/0.20 mm intake/exhaust. Previously all valves were tight, intakes were 0.10 and exhausts was between 0.10 - 0.15.

After the adjustment, the cold start was fine, but after 1-2 mins of the rpm drops to about 800-900 RPM and the bike dies. I need to do TB balance at this point? or can i get it stable idle by using the TB bypass screw. I can try to do my first TB sync, but I would need the bike to idle. Any suggestions appreciated. thanks.

Such a dramatic change after your valve adjustments suggest you've done something wrong. I suggest you check them again.

BTW, 0.10 inlet and 0.15 exhaust is what the settings for the rest of the world. USA for some unknown reason want the larger clearances. Why, it's the same motor? Considering the clearances increase as the engine temperatures rise, the rest of the world setting is plenty IMHO.

All Heron head smallblocks are .006" intake & .008" exhaust V7C manual is wrong it was amended in V7, Stone, Racer, Special manual

You can increase the idle speed by opening the air bypass screws. Also Steve has given you the correct clearances, which is what you used, so good there.

i open up the LH side and saw this

I hope there's no damage but it looks so bad. LMK if theres serious damage, I never seen such gaps before :( .

these then are the correct value?

  • Specification Desc./Quantity

  • Electric Electric starter

  • Engine idle speed 1100 +/- 100 rpm

  • Intake valve clearance 0.15 mm (0.0059 in)

  • Exhaust valve clearance 0.20 mm (0.0079 in)

Will check that, so I will watch when the intake opens, goes to bottom center, then comes up again, that should be tdc on compression. Correct? Thanks for the tip will check tomorrow.

I don't know where you get the term bottom center from.
start from scratch. both plugs pulled, rear wheel off ground, trans in highest gear. the intake valve is closest to the injector the exhaust closest to exhaust header. spin the rear tire forward until the intake valve starts down then comes up most of the way. put the large diameter straw in the hole and spin forward one tap at a time until the straw is in it's highest position. It will be just before it starts to drop down. that will be top dead center and it's all you care about. set intake to 6 thousands and exhaust to 8. then switch to the other cylinder and spin engine forward just like on the other one.
Now if you owned a 2017 or newer the setting will be 4 & 6 before someone asks.

I actually made a metered chopstick
You need the piston at Top Dead Centre on the compression stroke to adjust the valves, bet that's where you made your error

Got the bike back idling nicely at 1100 RPM again thanks to Kevin.NZ suggestions. Thank you so much!!! @vagrant bdc was just something I read on wikipedia :) thank you everyone for support. I am going for a test ride.
