A question re mufflers, are they symmetrical?

This is a silly question as it wouldn't make sense for them not to be but I just want to confirm. If measuring from say the widest edge of the rear tire to the center of both mufflers exit, are the distances the same? I just noticed when putting them back on after changing the rear tire that the left muffler distance is over an inch more than the right and nothing that I can see appears scratched or bent. These are Agostini mufflers but that shouldn't make a difference. Thanks.

Thanks Vagrant but no, both mufflers on the outside with their captive screws facing inward through the hanger bracket. Neither of the heavy stainless hanger brackets appear to be bent differently, other than being opposite.

Todd thanks for the reply and image. Mine looks similar or maybe the left is out even a bit father than that one but I think I'll leave it the way its is.

Not wanting to open a can of worms, but nearly every photo of a California 1400 I have seen with agostini slip ons the LEFT hand side one always is 'hanging down' also like a......you know...... and not many you see with the muffler meeting smoothly with the heat shields. I ended up fitting Mistral conicals for that very reason which in Austalia was a 2 month extra wait, but very happy & worth it. Each to their own of course. With the mountings on the 1400 there is a bit of movement in the 'slip on amount' of each muffler, and a little on the brackets/angle as well (which I found with the stock ones too & some Audace ones I had fitted as a 'stop gap') does allow for some adjustment/fiddling for us fussy ones. From the side view (I know that is not what you asked) filing the screw holes a little on the middle heatshields can also help in aligning it up so it matches smooth with the muffler. :)

Interesting... My 2014 Custom with Mistrals bought in 2015 don't seem to show this disparity. As it's 38F and raining, don't think I'm going out to look right now. Rest assured I will though.... ;-)

To follow up; the end of my left muffler was out 1 3/4" farther than the right. The end of the threaded studs from the right muffler that pass through the muffler bracket were all but touching the right swing arm, while the left muffler studs were well clear of contact.
So I heated and slightly bent the right hanger which moved the end of the right muffler out about 3/4" and now there's a good 1/2" clearance between the right muffler studs and the right swing arm.
Nevertheless the end of the left muffler is still out almost an inch more than the right. Looking closer the issue is that the front of the left muffler where it joins the H collector is more toward the center of the engine compared to the right. This results in it angling out more which accounts for the end of the left muffler being further out.

You realize of course, that the cylinder connecting rods are not in the same plane, right?

Sit on your motorcycle on the center stand if possible, and stand on the footpads while looking down towards the fuel tank, or just standing astride your motorcycle looking directly over the fuel tank down towards the cylinders...Hmm.

I've never been to inclined to measure exhaust offsets, but I'm almost positive that they vary on every modern Moto Guzzi by some amount. Point to ponder I guess.

Hey James, sorry mate, I was saying the Mistrals are fine - glad yours are too!. It is the agostini's on every one I looked at that were not a real good fit, (like the photos with 2 examples, Ag1 & Ag2 are the Ago's, mine is the 3rd picture file name 'Mist1' with the Mistrals) which is why I went with the Mistrals. Cheers,

Yes I realize cylinders are offset Scott, maybe that contributes? Anyway the muffler ends are now within 1" difference from center and that's good enough for me. I also tweaked the shields to let them fit better while I was at it.
