Hi all, just joined the forum as I'm about to buy an '04 California EV with 7900 miles for $4000. The bike looks very clean and seems to run fine.

Been perusing the web and can't find too much info on problem areas to check. The one that did scare me was the "lower fork tube cracking" (?!?) Would appreciate any input on things to check and, most importantly, what should make me walk away from the deal.

Thanks! Eric

Hi Eric, welcome to the forum!

Do you have the VIN# yet? Post it so I can give you the history of the bike. On the '04s, the only major concern is the hydraulic lifter cam recall. From memory, the cracking lower fork triple tree was only an '03 problem (unless it's a very late '03 production bike). Otherwise, the speedometer will fail in time, and needs to be replaced, because it cannot be repaired. Others may have more to say, but those are the major points.

Thanks. The bike did have the valve work done and the fork clamp isn't affected.

Took a closer look at the bike this weekend and except for the tires being a little old and hard, it's looks ready for the season!

Take a look at the DOT date. If they were made more than 5 years ago, replace them before you ride it. They won't perform as intended.
