Any reason this will not work on a loop?

What "problem of finding decent quality points and condensers for loop frame Guzzi's"? I haven't had any problems finding quality points and condensers here in the US.

If that ignition fits into the Loop distributor, it might be worth trying. Certainly much less expensive than the Harper's/Pertronix electronic ignition and hopefully more durable too.
 
In the UK we are not as lucky as you guys when it comes to things like points and condensers.Hard to find decent quality stuff that is not made in the far east and not very durable.Looks like I will be the guinea pig as I have bought one of these kits!
My son in law is a car mechanic and owns old minis and says these Powerspark kits have been working OK in cars for years.
 
Shouldn't be any more difficult as our parts all come from Europe! I buy from MG Cycle http://www.mgcycle.com which most likely sources their parts from Stein-Dinse in Germany or somewhere similar.

I have found a problem with the electronic kit.The trigger ring is designed to fit over the points cam,under the rotor arm.The Fiat cam must be a different shape to the Guzzi cam as the ring will not fit.I will have to consider modifiying the trigger ring.All the other parts will fit OK.
 
I have installed an electronic ignition amplifier on my loop like so:

No need for a condenser any more. Since the points are being used for a timing signal only (just a few millivolts) and no longer for a route to charge the coil, the points last almost for ever, just keep the fiber block / points cam lubed. The one on my bike has worked perfectly for about 6000 miles so far and almost no wear on the points contact surfaces & only a slight timing tweak necessary in that time.

If I knew about these I probably would have got one.I will have to stick with the kit I now have and modify the shape of the hole in the trigger ring to fit.
 
The Velleman kit from the US has an "assembled" option for an extra $20. Worth it unless you're handy with a soldering iron.

The picture of the kit on their website looks identical to the kit on American suppliers website but it's half the price!

Just bought one of these, what's it like to wire into the original loom?
 
The Harper's kit is a bit pricey, but if it's a good reliable system, I would go for it.

Does anyone have any experience with this kit from Harper's ?
 
It's been a while now, but when I was mucking around with my Loop projects ignition, I inquired with these guys about whether they would consider a custom-built unit using the stock distributor assembly:

They weren't, sadly. Worked great on a BMW 327/28 I restored the engine on. Very tidy little unit.

Ended up using the transistorized set-up above and set the advance up w/ different springs to slow down the curve using an ancient distributor tester.

Can anyone tell me if i'm liable to have any problems running two of these on a Guzzi Le Mans II?
Seeing they're rated at 4 amps each and the standard alternator only chucks out 20.
 
For a 2-points set-up, you don't have the issue of retaining the distributor cap which you can't with most electronic ignitions on single-point installations. I'd use a Dyna III or Sachse now that those are available again.

I may eventually go down the electronic ignition route but in the meantime I'm interested in seeing whether my dual points Guzzi will work with 2 of these modules. anyone know if these do indeed consume 4 amps each and whether the Le Mans II alternator can cope with them plus lights, charging the battery etc?
