hello guzziones,

I have a UK griso 1100, 07 model, 13,000 miles
last week after removing the front wheel to have a new dunlop roadsmart fitted the mechanic said the two discs would need likely need replacing to pass the yearly inspection. He said that the bobbins between the disc carrier and the actual disc were allowed to have sideways float but not back to front. They move by about 2mm but seem secure enough. He also suggested crimping the bobbins up in a vice. There's no noticeable effect on braking.

Anyone heard of this?

Where do you get replacements?

Main dealer quotes £350 uk pounds each

Regards,

Andy (UK)

Usually the issue people have with the bobbins is they get too tight and need to be loosened. Too tight can cause the disc to run out of true and the brakes pulse.
I would compare what you have with what others have.

Your mechanic would fall over if he saw the really floating front discs on my Ducati 900ss. Thy probably had 2mm of fore/aft movement 20,000 miles ago.

There does come a point when excessive wear on the rotor/bobbins becomes excessive, but 2mm isn't that point. I have replaced rotors on bikes when the play got so great the bobbins were in danger of falling out. Just for a learning exercise I took the rotors apart and found the bobbins has been worn through is places. Not exactly what you would want to run.
