Hello I just fell in love with and acquired a 1996 California 1100i. The PO who is the Az rep for mgnoc appeared to take excellent care of the bike. However since I have had the bike the headlamp indicator has flickered on and off which the PO attributed to a loose bulb , but the light would go off as I increased the speed of the bike. On the last ride the battery light came on and off on the instrument panel and the voltage reading on a meter on the bike went from 15.1 to 12.4. And never went back up. when I stopped the bike I thought I smelled burning from the front of the bike although it could have been brake smell. Am I looking at potential rectifier or alternator issues. Thanks
Jason

A voltage reading of 15.1 is too high. Where were you taking this reading from? If it was across the battery, I would consider swapping it out for a new one.

Sounds like a failed voltage regulator, but start with checking the fuses as well. I have the new mosfet versions in the online Store linked above, or several plug and play options.

I'm not sure where this reading is from. The

I checked the fuses and didn't see anything unusual. I have ordered the book guzziology, have the owners manual and saw the PDF download for the service manual. I am unfamiliar with this site. Is the voltage regulator something I can oder from here? Is installation pretty straight forward. I'm not much of a wrencher but I can follow instructions.

I should have looked before replying. I do see where I can order the voltage regulator. Thank you

There should be two yellow wires gong from the alternator to the voltage regulator. Disconnect them and connect the leads to a Digital multi meter . Using the AC voltage scale, you should get about 20 Vac at idle, about 40 Vac at 3K RPM, and about 80 Vac at 5K RPM. If you get these readings, the stator is good. That will indicate the voltage regulator/rectifier has failed. BTW, the regulator/rectifier is the most likely item to fail.

I will try that. Thank you for the guidance

The voltage regulator had smoke coming out of the back of it. Ordered a new one and A local Moto Guzzi shop is going to install it and check the rest of the charging system. I know I can install the voltage regulator myself but I feel more comfortable having a mechanic check the rest.
