Cali Bassa downshift problem

My 2000 Cali bassa has 22k miles and since the weekend I've had a downshift problem when the bike warms up. Gearbox oil present and accounted for. Gearlever is sluggish to return back up to normal position after a down shift and sometimes needs a nudge from my boot. Checked linkages and lubricated in case some winter gunk and corrosion is causing it, no difference. Could this be the return spring not behaving as it should? Upshifting becomes clunky around the same time the downshift problems arise, especially between 1st and 2nd on the upshift.

Shafty, if everything is accounted for, then yes, I suspect that the shift return spring is likely starting to fail. I replaced one a few months back on a '02 Stone with similar miles. Get to it, before it gets to you.

Any thoughts on why my '04 Stone downshifts with noticeable noise, even with suitable throttle "blipping"? The Stone is my 78th bike (The rider is prehistoric) and for the life of me I cannot get a clean downshift. There are no obvious problems with the gearchange lever returning to its usual position. The bike has 7000 miles. I have been resorting to leaving it in top gear or 4th until I come to a stop, then silently changing down to neutral. Upshifts are clean. I am baffled!

Not a guzzi spring expert, but I did work in the spring industry for a year or so and springs work, then fail. but they were heat treated in italian pizza ovens. my experience is they work great, until they dont work at all.... just some more input

Could be shifting technique. I don't care how many bikes you have had, Guzzi and BMW airhead boxes will clunk if not shifted as follows: pre-loading the shifter and do not fully disengaging the clutch when shifting up or down. If that doesn't help, or it is how you have been shifting, it may need to have the shimming of the shift drum checked. See Pete's transmission shimming piece. https://www.guzzitech.com/GearboxClunk-Pete_R.html
