Gday, I'm having trouble finding 85W90 GL5 gear oil for my 2014 custom. 80W90 is readily available. Is this viscosity ok to use or not? Where I live there is only one Moto Guzzi dealer and they are not very helpfull. The dealer that I bought it from went out of buisness!

A bit far away for you but Fortnine had it in stock, and your dollar is nearly the same as ours ;)
That’s the cold index - maybe it would not make a difference, but the warranty police might not agree with me !

I believe it has more to do with compatibility with different metals than viscosity. I found that Moly 80W90 gear oil is listed as compatible with yellow metals.

I’m probably wrong but I think 80/90 is a super set of 85/90? It’s working range is wider so i can’t see how anyone could complain?

Thank you to all who replied. I think I will try to get the 85/90 oil online if I can't source it locally. I had to buy a new battery for the Guzzi the other day after nearly 6 years . That's not bad, but I nearly fell over when I heard the replacement was going to coast $250! They had the same battery but the poles were reversed. I didn't like the idea but ended up paying for one made in China for $199. This one has 4 poles and more CCA.

Assuming you’re talking Australian dollars here. In which case that’s about right for a good battery, well the correct battery anyway. Can’t see why someone would only have the incorrect one in Adelaide! Northern Territories maybe, but Adelaide? Good luck with the Chinese one.

Yes, use synthetic as specified in the owner's manual.

FYI, you can also order an OEM Yuasa battery online when you order the gear lube. Win, win!

^^^^ The yellow metals (brass or bronze based) they are usually referring to are in the syncro mesh of auto transmissions , not
overly relevant to Moto-Guzzi . Peter

Yeah, since the Carona virus hit my local Motorbike shop went out of business as have many other ones too. We have the highest unemployment rate in the country and one of the highest electricity prices in the world thanks to incompetent government! We are just a big country town here according our neighbours Victoria , but then they are the carona capital of Australia.
