California 1100i 1996 model fuel pump noise

Just acquired a lovely California 1100i and she goes really well and contrasts with my small block V7 Special.
However, one thing is bugging me - constant noise from fuel pump.
Pump is new (fitted by dealer I bought from) and makes quite a strong priming noise on initial switch on (which ceases after around 3 seconds) BUT the pump continues to make a noise (similar to the fan coming on a liquid cooled bike) throughout my journey.
As I have no point of reference or access to an identical model I do not know if this is "normal" or peculiar to my bike.
The bike runs and rides fine but the whining is irritating and I would like to eliminate or reduce the noise if possible.
I intend to replace the fuel filter when a new one arrives as I have heard that a blocked fuel filter could cause problems. I would like to know if other Cali owner's experience similar and whether this is normal?
The fuel pump on my bike sits outside the fuel tank and is beneath the battery under the left hand side panel. Some people have said it appears noisy as in is not contained within the tank to deaden the noise. Unconvinced!
Thanks for any advice.

Yes they make noise. Some more than others. On the 1100 EVs I had I could definitely hear the start up noise, but one the bike was running it wasn't noticeable. If you check the Archive, the fuel filter for a Saab 99 turbo is a good fit. Be prepared to do a little cursing, changing that filter which is located under the tank has some challenges. When you do change the filter, be sure to use new sealing washers.

I,m having a problem along the same line have replaced fuelpump, pressure regulator, filter ,
my fuel pump is silent i'm having doubts about the return valve when taken apart it contained just the little ball
as far as I know all ballvalves have a spring in it after experimenting with various springs it was nearly silent. However the motor will not go over 3k rpm after it is fully warm??

Managed to stop pump whine on my bike. Turned out to be a partially blocked fuel tap filter so pump was working extra hard to suck fuel through. As new taps were very reasonable I replaced both taps and noise has totally gone. Was going to replace fuel filter until I saw what a tight fit it was between frame tubes under tank! It can wait for another day - the filter could not have been the source of the noise anyway as it sits further along the fuel circuit (after the pump but before the injectors). The in tank filters should stop any crud anyway (as I found when taking taps off).
