Greetings, yesterday I picked up a 2014 (2015?) California Custom and I'm just trying to educate myself on this model as well as what changes were made between years of California 1400 production? I have a V85TT and have become familiar with it but know next to nothing about the 1400 series. Any links on the design and history of this model would be appreciated. Obviously I've been lurking through many posts here which has been very useful.

Hi Clifton,
Welcome, I'm sure Todd and others will be along shortly with answers, cheers,
Meldrew, aka Ron Gibson 👍

Hi Clifton, congrats on the 1400. Hope you'll add your info to our Registry; https://www.guzzitech.com/forums/threads/cal1400-registry-pics-thread-add-your-bike.11538/
Are you asking specifically about the Custom or all models of 1400? If just the Custom, no changes between 14/15. Not until the Audace and/or late production Eldorado did they make slight changes like ride-by-wire, fork manufacturer and a few other smaller things outside of visible differences. Same with the Touring model.

I have Dave but figured suggestions from those here very familiar with these bikes to be more useful, but thanks.

Greetings Todd and I will add to the registry. I'm interested in all the 1400's, the development as well as different versions. Sifting through "google" I have pieced together some in bits and pieces.

I'm considering a 1400 Touring. Can anyone clarify if the Touring model was made for the whole 2013-2020 period of the 1400 California's run?
Did it come with ride-by-wire from the start, and if not, beginning with which model year?
Did Guzzi ever update the OEM maps to provide better fueling?
Did they come with heated grips?

The biggest update was around 2017. The original models are ride-by-wire but run cables from the twist grip to the control unit under the tank, the later models are full ride by wire direct from the twist grip. The switch gear was also updated on the later models, the main benefit being moving the much easier to operate cruise control button to the left hand side and being able to adjust it without disconnecting and starting all over again on the earlier models. The older models you have to hold the throttle at the speed you want and push the button on the righthand switch block to set it, without moving the throttle. To adjust the speed you have to disconnect and start all over again :). Also an air pump (I think that what it's called) was added to the header pipes for emission reasons. There was one update to fueling map for the earlier models, but you can go the whole hog with Todd's fueling modifications on this site, giving big increases in power and torque.

Thanks for this very helpful info! Sounds like the later models would be the way to go for me.

I'm sure someone here will correct me if I'm wrong but I don't believe the 2017+ bikes have factory wiring, switch, or dash display for heated grips like the earlier models are. If that matters to you.

That'd be weird if the later models lacked nice features the earlier ones had.
