I recently purchased a 2014 California 1400 Touring and after one week started having problems with starting the bike. It is now in the shop, but also seems to have the repair technician flummoxed. This is an intermittent problem, and there is no indication when it will occur. When you turn the key in the ignition the dash lights fail to light and pushing the starter yields nothing. Turning the key off, and then back on may cause the dash to come alive with all lights, or it may not. Repeating this process while saying a Hail Mary, may cause the key-turning process to yield the desired result eventually. Cursing at the bike yields similar results. It would be helpful to know what the engineers had in mind when they designed the electrical system on this beast. Is this a problem with a relay? I fear I bought a lemon, though a very nice-looking one. I was curious to know if anyone has had a similar situation and what the diagnosis was.

Hi! Welcome to GuzziTech.

Please read the four screens at the top of the page above the 4 dots. They contain IMPORTANT INFORMATION.

SEARCH is your BEST friend here.

There is literally nothing about your model that has not been written extensively about.

Always perform a SEARCH before starting a new thread. What you want is right there. You need only put forth a little effort to find it and read to learn.

You have a common ignition switch failure. Lots of posts and info.

You did not buy a lemon. You bought a 9-10 year old piece of equipment and all machinery fails at some point. You need a little repair and you will be right as rain.

You can start here.

FYI: Never use dielectric grease on electrical connections. Dielectric grease is an INSULATOR, not a CONDUCTOR.

Have a look at the post "Ignition switch fail" in the sticky posts. Mine did this.
