California Idle Adjustment

Hi, the last time my '96 Cali 1100i was at the main stealers they set the idle speed to 1200 rpm which I find a little too high for my taste.
Is there an easy way to adjust the idle back down without getting into TPS adjustment or any other electronic stuff?

Spec for the 1100s is 1,150 RPM. So 1200 is just fine. Low idle speed is not good for the engine anyway. I recommend getting accustomed to the idle speed. If you do lower it, everything else will need to be tweaked. See the post on the board for setting up EVs. Your bike would be the same, except idle opening should be 2.1 degrees. I'll bet if you follow the procedure, you will get about an 1150 to 1200 RPM idle.

If you really want to lower it some and not mess up the electronics, start by closing the air bypass screws a 1/4 turn at a time. It will lower the idle, but may mess up the running.
 
John - would that throttle opening you quote for the EV apply to my '94 Cali 1100i? I can't find anything specific to my bike on setting TPS etc. - if there is anything on the forum I would appreciate a point in that direction.

All the P8 machines should be set to 2.1 degrees and the idle spec is 1150. The 94 Cali 1100i uses a P8. https://www.guzzitech.com/forum/160/1676.html
 
The mention of low idling speed being bad for Cali's ,is a bit alarminmg . My 88 Cali 3 was idling Very low when I bought it last spring and I have to assume had been idling low for the 17 years the previouse owner had it. Now it "chugs away " at what the tacho suggests is 5-600 rpm,so slow that I can see the carb mount rubbers compressing in and out with each stroke and the genny light flickers.
I know this particular engine has small valves and carbs and a heavy flywheel,so probably will run at low revs,so I have to ask,what will be damaged ? How accurate is the tach ? and what in the experience of you chaps is the safest idling speed. ( I can always take of the alternater cover and use a hand held tach )
Pity if I have to speed the idle up, it's a delight to watch and hear as it slowly and gently rocks and chugs on the side stand .

The low idle will lower the oil pressure to the engine. Shouldn't be too big of an issue if you increase RPM prior to moving out. The 1100 produces more torque than the earlier engines, so there is more "stress" on the big end and mains. Oil pressure is your friend to prevent metal to metal contact and to increase flow to cool the plain bearings. The 1000 engine that you have isn't as susceptible to the issue as the 1100, but I'd still bring it up to a 1000 rpm idle speed just to be on the safe side. Just remember on the carb bikes to open the throttle with the twist grip before turning in the slide stop screw. If you don't, the screw will cut a groove in the slide.

Sounds like common sence, but I have been an engineer and a bike enthusiast for 40 years,and I just hadn't thought of that,sure I'v seen indentations in the taper under the slide,but never given it much thought. Never stop learning eh.
