Hi , I am new to GUZZIs but bought a 1999 Cali 1100i with a tacho that does not work.
I also opened it up and found that the small moving coil - just above the hair springs - that moves back and forth with the needle - was open circuit .
If you are that far in then well done - just undo the 2 screws that hold the magnet and coil - after unsoldering the springs - and put a meter across the 2 tags under the facia which are the tags that the coil solders to .
you should get about 160 ohms - mine was open circuit
I then ordered a small reel of wire . 00275" or .063mm and rewound it -take care soldering and mine is fine - Phew
as long as you have 12v an earth and a pulse coming up from the coil you are fine - you can use a meter on dwell and see if it pulses - this confirms the pulse coming from the coil
