Just a thought ......
With all the talk about oil quality / oil viscosity / oil additives playing an important part in causing premature tappet failures or just because of plain errors ..... I was wondering if anyone took measurements or has the specs on the cam profile for these engines?

With information on the lobe lift for the intake / exhaust cams ........ could this be a way to check the wear on the tappets and/or cam without taking the rocker assembly out?

Thinking out loud ......(Like taking measurment somewhere on the rocking levers) and comparing values.

Dan, once the tappets start to fail destruction will be very rapid. Unless you were uncannily lucky and took the rocker covers off to check at the *Exact* moment the HLD coating on the tappets failed the 'Measurement' would be immediately detectable by sight and the amount of movement in the rockers that can be felt.

Also when everything is happy the tops of the tappets where the pushrods sit is just above, about 1-1.5mm, the top of the cambox with the piston at TDC compression, (Both valves closed.) If they have vanishedinto the cambox its because the feet of the tappets and the cam lobe have gone bye-byes.

Measuring in these circumstances is pointless as what will alert you to the problem is the noise. If the noise is loud enough to hear? The wear will be apparent with no other measuring tools than your eyes and fingers!!!!

I see said the blind man.
I was looking at it from the cam's nose ... point of view.

Having it on the stand for an oil change I looked at the tappets when the cam was on its heel (TDC)
Like you mentioned the tops of the tappets where the pushrods sit is just above and at this position …….. I can rotate the tappets through its oil film

On both jugs, the exhaust tappet’s top, is ever so slightly purging out more than the intake tappet.

Would it be normal to have a 10thous play on the rocker levers at TDC?

Thanks Pete.

Hi Dan,

I recorded the rocker arm axial play of my 2009 A5 engine Griso when the bike is new. It was:-

rockerarmaxialplay.jpg

note: mileage in km and measurement in mm and date in dd/mm/yyyy

Thank you Phang.
With those values ...it reassures me that things are in spec.

Anyway between our two bikes .....

Cheers
