Changing headlight bulb

It would seem to be a no brainer, but maybe I have no brain!! It looks like a very complicated task to change the bulbs.

When I turn the ignition switch, there are 4 small lights on either side of the headlamp assembly. There is a large lens at the top and the high beam bulb at the bottom.

What is that large lens for? The regular lights? What are those 4 small lights on either side?

Low beam and dipped beam = same thing. Through the large lens. Your photographs suggest your low beam bulb might be knackered.

You are aware of the light switch on the RH Handlebar (at the front)?

Do you have a pic of this switch on the front of the RH bar? I've read a few references to this switch and have searched all over the bars in my 2014 Custom and I can't find this mystery switch(?).

Funny, I was just preparing my headlight for bulb replacements tonight when I saw this post! I've been running my low beams always ON for what probably was a whole first year, as I completely forgot about the light switch kiwi dave just showed you. My bulbs didn't blow yet but the output has decreased noticeably, so I got some Sylvania SilverStar bulbs from Amazon.

When you release the headlight from its holder you'll see a square hatch opening in the back. Unscrew those four philips head screws (mine were very hard to unscrew as it requires a tiny screwdriver, slips easily and unscrews really slow and hard.) When you open the hatch you'll see something like this:

The bulb that's not working on your headlight is the one with the green cable on the photo.

I recently replaced my low beam. Be careful when you take the light off as the lower mount has several small bushings that will fall out. Putting it back was a bit of a PIA. Gotta love Italian engineering.

Ah ha, mystery solved, thanks. Perhaps the switch, not available on my Custom, is a Touring option(?).

I've never seen one without a headlight switch but yours seems to be the first :)

There must be a daytime running lights law where you're from, although that's what the column LEDs were supposed to be for. Is the speedometer light always on, even during the day (say in a tunnel?) My speedo light comes on only when I turn the headlights on.

Also, could it be that someone had to replace that whole housing but didn't find the one with a headlight switch on it?

I have a 2014 Custom and it has the light switch on the right side handlebar.

Could the this missing switch be associated with a Canadian model? Are there any other Canadian owner's that can confirm this?

Stupid Canadian lawmakers. If they have had used their eyes, they would have observed that the LEDs without the headlight on is much more brighter and noticeable than when the headlight is added (the LEDs dim when this happens). Isn't that the whole idea of headlight on during daylight hours?

Do they make you wear a clown suit and flashing lights on your butt too?

You're right. Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Act requires that all new vehicles sold in (or imported into) Canada and built after 1 December 1989, be fitted with daytime running lights that go on when you start the vehicle. I suspect that's why I don't have the options to turn off any of the lighting, including the instrument & speedometer lighting that remains on whenever the key's on.

Thank you everyone.

It seemed like a daunting task, then I called New Haven Powersports and spoke to a mechanic. He told me I had to completely remove the headlight assembly lol. Yes, incredible as it sounds that's what has to be done to replace a light bulb. But at least one of you guys knew that!

Not being a wrench it was a gigantic PIA. So I got it off (still attached with wires), went to Lowe's to get the screwdriver, unscrewed those 4 phillips heads, then was a bit baffled on how to remove the bulb. I didn't see the clip! So I unscrewed the 2 screws that secure the bulb and one of them dropped into the headlight housing!

Anyway it got dark so I'll have to continue tomorrow.

Yep and the bushing fell out and I couldn't find it. Had to search!!
