Charging system problems?

I have a 2012 v7, and I have been having trouble starting the bike cold and it misses at around 4,000 rpms, sort of like a cough every few seconds. I took off the alternator cover when I was doing a valve check and noticed that the stator had a black coating on it. Could my problems be caused by something going wrong with the charging system?

I doubt the charging system is to blame for the misfiring and hard starting. Actually, the engine will start and run fine (at least for a while) with the charging system completely inoperative (disconnected). The shiny "black coating" in the photo is not an issue but rather part of the electrical insulation.

The most probable source of your problem is fueling issues caused by clogged tank vents and/or the ECU running the injectors too lean.

Does your fuel cap "hiss" when you open it after a long run? Tank vents & hoses are clogged or crimped.

Try putting some Techron or other fuel injector cleaner in a few tanks of gas.

If none of the above helps have Todd here reflash your ECU. He did mine and it really brought the machine to life.
