'97 Guzzi 1100i Sport. Clutch does not freely release; especially when hot. Have replaced clutch cable & adjusted at both ends. Maybe release rod worn? Any help with this issue will be appreciated. Thanks.

By release do you mean disengage power or the clutch engages slowly and is hard to pull? The first was common on the old 2mm clutch spline hub, practically unheard of on the 4mm spline clutch that should be in your bike. If the second, check that the clutch arm at the back of gearbox moves freely. I'm seen the arm freeze to the pin resulting in difficult movement. If that is the case, it can be very difficult to get the pin out. Be careful not to break off the boss on the gearbox cover where the arm attaches. Use plenty of penetrating oil and take your time, even if it takes several days to get it out.

It is rare for the clutch push rod to fail.

I mean, disengage power. Will check the clutch arm for free movement, also. Thanks.

The clutch arm should be adjusted (the screw in the arm) so that when the clutch is disengaged, the arm is at about 90 degrees or slightly less to the push rod. If there is wear in the push rod or throw out bearing this adjustment should compensate for that. About how many miles do you have on this clutch?

Clutch was replaced 10 K ago. Do you have to remove the swing arm to access the clutch arm adjustment screw?

Do you know if the 4mm clutch system was installed? If someone put in the 2mm system, it could have the issue you describe from a worn clutch hub. I had a CAII that would develop the issue every 3 to 4 K miles with the 2mm clutch hub. It served as the test bed for the new clutch design.

Before you go and make any adjustments at the clutch arm, have someone squeeze in the clutch and observe the position of the clutch arm. As to making an adjustment, it depends on how flexible you are as to if you need to remove the swing arm. If you have a lift, or don't mind laying on the ground with the bike on a side stand you should be able to adjust without removing the swing arm.

Hi John,
FYI. I replaced the release rod, bushings & cup. Problem solved. Appreciate your help.
