i've just spent a week in Umbria, and had hoped to see a few Guzzis. Well, I did, if three can constitute a few. I saw half a dozen Triumphs, about the same number of Harleys, maybe ten of those two wheeled VAG Group things, a goodly number of Japanese bike, a lot of BMWs and more scooters than my cat's got fleas.
And to rub it in, the rather fetching Italian lady sat on the back of a Yamaha said "Moto Guzzi, do,they still make those?"
There were a lot of fast moving bikes on the opposite carriageway, seen from the coach window, but they went by in a flash, so I couldn't focus on them quickly enough to identify them. They must have been Guzzis, surely.

Last year I visited Italy as well. I could not help myself counting motorbikes. 80% of all bikes is BMW. followed by Harley Davidsons. The only Guzzi's were non-italian bikers. Italians do not appreciate their own products. The police drives in audi's and the beer you get in Trento is german as well (and I happen to prefer menabrea and peroni's). Germany has taken over Italy. Sad :-(

"Germany has taken over Italy. Sad :-("

In the interest of full disclosure, Peter, et al, I am (technically) a dual US-German citizen, but the latter is a family and sentimental thing, only. I am an American, period.

Now, with that out of the way, permit me to comment.

First, my own experiences of living in and subsequently visiting Italy numerous times pretty much mirror yours WRT motorcycles, tho there were more Guzzis running around Italy in the late '70's and early '80's when I lived there. Even the Carabinieri rode them. I do find it sad to see them now on beemers, but -- to add to the Euro mix linguistically, c'est la vie.

The longer story is funny, but even I don't have time for it now, but a customs official at Malpensa once stamped my export papers listing Guzzi parts with a vigorous bang and almost shouted, "You, sir, are an Italian patriot." :giggle:

Second, Germans have been visiting Italy for millennia. In many of those sorties, they came armed with more than Euros or Marks! :(

Third, the Alto Adige (or, as many of its residents prefer, Sudtirol) was until only 98 years ago, Austrian. We need not go here into a discussion of "Grossdeutschland!"), but Sudtirol has always been Germanic and remains so despite the 1918 "Poof, it's Italy!"

Do not misunderstand. Despite my German genes, I am an unabashed Italophile -- as are many Germans -- who does not shout "Freiheit fur Sudtirol!"

Best wishes ... or perhaps I should say, "Die besten Wünsche." Oops, I mean, Auguri!

Most people comment on how few Guzzis they see on the roads in Italy, yet if you check out the member list of the Guzzi World Club you will find loads of small Italian Guzzi Clubs, so they must be there, but just not seen most of the time.
The time to see lots of Guzzis in Italy is the September Raduno in Mandello.
