Do the gearboxes of the Breva 750 use phenolic resin cages as do the big blocks?

Some years ago, Guzzi gear expert (the late?) Charlie Cole told me never to use synthetic of GL-5 oil in my 1100 Stone Touring model gearbpx due to the "plastic" ball bearing cages collapsing from the use of synthetic oil or GL-5 grade gearbox oils. In fact, his old website "Zydeco Racing" still contains this warning.

I recently acquired a lovely, low miles (12K) '04 Breva 750 and I'm anxious about the likelihood of the phenolic resin caged bearings being in its gearbox.

Can anyone who has been inside one of these 5-speeds advise me on this?

Thanks in advance,

Ralph

Ralph, I haven't been in a small block 5 speed. Based on the bearing size it is double row and could be plastic/nylon cage. That said, I have only seen one input bearing failure on a big block 5 speed which uses a larger double row. Probably due to an imperfection in the cage. Every other 5 speed I've been into (usually for a leaking seal) has had no issue with the plastic bearing, but if I am in there, I do replace them with a steel cage bearing. So in my opinion failure is rare and I would say the benefit of synthetic oil outweighs the possibility of bearing failure.

I have only had pre-2000 boxes apart. BUT since 07 till now 14yrs of synthetic and no failures is good enough to say it's alright to use IN a small block trans. I still use Dino in 5 spd big blocks
