Dropping Oil Pan

I've had my Griso for about 2000 miles and am trying to change my own oil. What's the secret to dropping the pan? I've taken out the 14 M6 screws and given it a couple of whacks with a mallet but no go. Does the filter need to come off as well? If so, where do I get the filter removing tool?
 
Ummmmm? If you are simply wanting to change the oil why not simply take out the drain plug?

To remove the sump you have to remove the filter and there are four bolts up in the filter well that also retain the sump.

You can see the 4 bolt holes around the filter *well*.

Filter wrench available at any auto store or order one from MPH/MG Cycles/Moto International/Speakers/Rosefarm wherever.

The drain plug is part 32 in the above pic.

Thank you Peter for the quick reply. Almost realtime!

I was also planning to change the filter. On my V11 I would drop the pan then use a belt type filter wrench to remove the oil filter.

Can you recommend or point me to an oil filter wrench on the internet? Auto parts stores are open late and on Sunday around here. Motorcycle shops are closed on Sunday and Monday in Dallas/Fort Worth area.

One more question: is it recommended to add a clamp around the oil filter to prevent it from unscrewing itself like on earlier models?

No need to drop the pan on the new models, but you will need a filter wrench. Tricky part is, is it the old style 8-flute, or the new 14? Most any Auto Parts store will have what you need. Do you have a spare filter already? Take with, and find the right one. I found a plastic-type that works great. No place to put a clamp, but if it's not tight, it will leak. They need to be more snug then normal it seems.

Not possible to clamp. No room to do it. Also with the new bikes, the pan stays on.

BMW specifies 11Nm for the oil filter (similar size filter), but that isn't tight enough for the Guzzi filter to not leak. I'm tightening the filter to about 15-20 Nm (start at 15, if it leaks increase 2Nm at a time until it doesn't).

I also try to clean out the filter well as completely as possible, then use a dental mirror to inspect where the filter will seal prior to installing a new filter. Put as much oil into the filter as you can priot to installing. It may eliminate the oil pressure fault when you start the bike, or it may not. If you get the fault, you will need the maintenance code to clear it from the dashboard. See https://www.guzzitech.com/forum/160/917.html

Also lube the filter rubber gasket with grease instead of motor oil (learned this from an long time BMW mechanic) the filter seals better and is easier to remove. I thing Pete and Todd covered everything else.
 
That was fun!

Per Todd's advice, I took my UFI filter to my local auto parts store and bought a plastic socket that mated perfectly. I got home and it wouldn't fit the filter on the bike. I thought maybe it was too wide so I started "shaving" off the plastic with a box cutter knife. After taking about 6mm off the diameter it still wouldn't fit. It appeared to be a 14 facet filter, not the 8 facet type. I went to another auto parts store to buy a universal type oil filter wrench similar to this one:

I was able to get the filter off with this one which turned out to be a FRAM filter with a larger diameter.

Put 3.6L of Agip 10W60 in from MPH in Houston. At the risk of setting off Armageddon - what oil are you using in your GRISO?

Agip 10W60 is what I use in my Griso... (it's the good stuff) ;)
