A couple of months ago I took 5 days off and went for a ride . Just cruising about 6 hours a day for 5 days using sponge ear plugs which I find generally ok . I only had 1 set with me so they spent pretty much the whole day in my ears . When I got home my ears felt a bit strange . 6 weeks later I am still battling a terrible ear infection deep inside causing nasty headaches . I had heard the sponge plugs should only be used once as they can't be cleaned but stupidly I didn't take notice . So anyone out there using dirty plugs that may be infected with bacteria be aware the results are not pleasant .

This outfit is in Papamoa! A nice ride west and bingo. I grew up in Tauranga. Such a beautiful area, as all of NZ is.:)

The plugs I got are in the $90 range. These are a bit pricy, but you can get make your own kits for a good price.

Wow!

I have used foam plugs every ride for decades. You can find a set in each jacket pocket in all my gear and a plastic zip lock bag of more in the saddlebag or under the seat of every one of my 8 bikes. In truth I have used the same plugs for a year or more.

I never put them in my mouth (how bizarre that is) and I’ve never washed them but they are bright orange and when they get dingy, I toss them and put out another pair.

I am obsessive compulsive about cleaning my ears and wash them daily in the shower, squirting them out with a shower hose like a Water-pic and I use Q-tip swabs daily to dry and clean them. From back growing up on the beach in San Diego, surfing and bodyboarding, I cannot stand the feeling of anything dirty in my ears so I keep them extremely clean. Even my doctor comments about them during my every 3 month checkups. I’m ear obsessive I guess.

Luckily I’ve never had an issue.

On long trips away from home, I sometimes splash them with rubbing alcohol at night and let them dry on the bathroom counter overnight. The alcohol evaporates quickly and is completely gone by morning. I know they are biologically inactive then for sure.

I hope your infection resolves quickly.
