Eldorado rich carb problem

Loopframe, original square slide DelOrtos. In storage for decade, carbs cleaned several times, including disassembly of the internal pump mechanisms. Bike now runs well, but only if the chokes are on just a bit. If forced to wide throttle, does not need choke. But idles best on closed chokes. Plugs are dark. Currently has well-cleaned K&N's, but will behave the same even if no air cleaners at all. Raising the needles a notch does not change things either.
Classic thinking indicated changing the slides, but why would this be necessary?
Ideas, guys?

Check the float level and make sure the pilot and main jets are not plugged. I recently brought a neglected Eldorado back to life and getting the carbs right was difficult.

Good suggestion for anyone working on Guzi carbs - I found over the years that DelOrto pilot jets have the tiniest, most clog-prone holes of all.

In addition to the above, make sure that the idle circuit passages are clean and clear. Ultrasonic cleaning followed with a blast of aerosol carb cleaner and compressed air seems to work best for me. Here's an excellent write-up on cleaning VHBs:

Charlie's note on ultrasonic dip [or carb cleaner dip, on the above site] may just do it - that's the one cleaning step I hadn't taken yet. The heavy-duty carb cleaner [comes in a bucket] is a really noxious chemical. Since the tiny passages in the carb body mostly affect idle, I had originally thought the problem elsewhere. But it's good to eliminate every possible culprit.

I no longer use the "carb cleaner in a bucket", haven't for years. Since I bought a cheap ultrasonic cleaner, I've disposed of all the toxic waste. ;-) I've also found that Super Clean in a spray bottle works better than just about anything else. It's the only product I've found that safely removes "varnish" from carb floats.

Thanks, Charlie - I'm scheduling a trip to HF today......
