So a few months ago, I pulled the engine out of the frame, which of course meant disconnecting a few electrical connections, so I could replace the rear main seal. I had largely put the bike back together but was waiting for new SS brake lines before getting it going again. It was non-op for about 2.5 months.

I got it all back together last weekend, and went to start it up, but when I put the key in the ignition, I didn't even get any lights on the dash. I was able to confirm there was power to the solenoid, but nothing from there on in. I pulled the solenoid off the starter, and as I'd seen previously, the post that accepts the power supply directly from the battery, would move in an out of the solenoid. I hooked up a light bulb continuity-tester, and found that when the post was fully extended, as it would be when the cable was on and the nut tightened all the way down that I wasn't getting any connection. When I pushed inward the light bulb would illuminate.

I assumed I'd found the problem and ordered a used starter/solenoid. I installed the new starter this evening, and I've still got the same problem! I've checked for earthing on the other side of the battery, and all is good. Once again no dash lights, no engine turn over...

I'm a bit confused by the wiring diagram I have as it shows there are 3 wires connected to the battery positive terminal, but on my bike there is only one. I'm guessing that current goes from the solenoid, to the starter relay etc, but I can't figure out why I'm not getting any juice to the ignition at all.

I checked all the other connections I had disassembled, and they all seem to be good. I should add that I hate electrical systems so I'm stumped at this stage.

Anyone have any magical insights? I did recharge the battery and it seems to be in decent condition.

Cheers.

Yeah - it was a big oversight...I had not connected the starter relay wire to the battery + terminal....hence no power to the dash lights etc.
How do you spell embarrassment?!

At least you stopped and thought it through to find the cause.

Kudos on your effort!
I did even take it for a quick blast. Oddly, I have a momentary loss of power, and the generator light flickered, before it came back. I suspect I might have a coil issue. Does anyone know what the primary resistance is for the coils on a 1984 V65?

Check in the downloads section, the service manual may be there.
