I managed to get over the water briefly a few times last year and with luck will do so again this year but for a bit longer.

I've got a policy with European Breakdown Cover, so don't have to get special cover each time.

I've never bothered with travel insurance always relying on my trusty E111 free from the post office.

But, the level of cover provided differs by country, people like the Swiss charge you for almost everything, including some of the cost of the ambulance should some twat knock you off. Sure your insurance might pay out in the end but can you fund potentially 10's of thousands for years while they sort it?

This website details what you get and where.

I tried the link it points at for further cover and for me and her it's £40 for the whole year.

Perhaps I'm just getting old but it may be of interest to those of you crossing La Manche.

Don't forget to read the small print. Took out a policy through MAG (Motorcycle Action Group) a few years back and unbelievably it excluded accident cover if you were on a motorcycle!! Cancelled it pretty sharpish. Now get cover included with my Bank account as long as I am wearing "appropriate motorcycle clothing". It also gives free Breakdown/Recovery in Europe for my car and bike.

Sound advice, always read the small print.

I'll be honest, I looked at the summary and it seemed suitable but I haven't read the detailed conditions as I don't need it until May.

I'm making a pilgrimage to Mandello in June and was planning to extend my AA breakdown cover for Europe - does anyone have good/bad experiences of this?

There's a couple of things I found out when I was checking my insurance a few years ago......

My general travel insurance from my bank very clearly said it excluded injuries if you're riding a motorcycle & have an accident. As I was going touring on my bike I questioned this and they found a useful bit in the small print: I was covered if I was riding my own bike and had left the UK on it and had a full UK bike licence. The exclusion in the 'big print' was because of the number of numpties with no riding experience who were hiring scooters on holiday and ending up in hospital.

The second thing I discovered was about bike recovery from abroad if it breaks down or is accident damaged. Some insurance companies will not recover your bike if it's worth less than the cost of the recovery. Now that might be unlikely if your bike is a relatively valuable modern one, but anything more than a few years old could easily get written off & scrapped rather than recovered. So check the small print again! To avoid this pitfall you could always have your bike crated & returned to UK by a local transport firm instead of it being recovered all the way by the insurance companies recovery contractor......but of course you have to pay for that and deal with all the paperwork.

HSBC do a very good travel insurance which covers motorcycles.
Beware of breakdown cover I've known of cases of them taking the bike to the local dealer they strip it then suddenly can't fix it and you eventually get a box of bits back.
Unless it's a simple fix I want a main dealer on the case or the bike shipped home pronto with a replacement vehicle for me to continue my holiday if required. Plus hotels if I'm waiting around for parts and repairs.
Think the worst case scenario and make sure it's covered. Shit happens I'm afraid
