Looking for a little guidance with some exhaust popping. Just picked up a 99 EV California with 7900 miles on it. It has the original exhaust and upgraded crossover from Harpers. It was initially popping on decel mostly from the right side pipe - and I thought maybe I had a bad baffle - but I just had the bike serviced - to include balancing the throttle bodies - valve adjustment, etc. Now it pops from both sides. Exhaust connections appear tight. Does not have a power commander. Any suggestions? yeah, yeah, I know...get the power commander. I might, but want to ensure it is running properly before I do that. Any help appreciated!

HAs the idle trim been adjusted? which computer in the '99? If it's a 15M you can only adjust it with one of the diagnostic tools. If it's a P8 it has a phsical screw you turn to adjust the trim methinks.

Pete

I have the P8 - the big one that sits behind the drivers seat. Where is the screw? All I see is a small white plastic thing (cover perhaps?) It is flush with the unit so I'm not sure how to pull it off - if in fact the screw is under there.

The screw is located behind a white plug. You have to break the center to be able to extract the plug. I use a little clear RTV to repair the hole you have to make to get it out. If you have a non conductive screwdriver, use one, if not be very careful. Also there is very little adjustment. The world spec is 3 +/- 0.5% CO, whereas the US spec is 1.9%. I recommend using the world spec. Also the air bypass screws are to be one turn out from seated.

There was no '99 EV in the U.S. -- most are leftover '98s titled as '99s. So if you have a P8 ECU, then it's a '98 for sure.
So yes, as now well covered above... the trim screw handles low-speed fueling as a blanket adjustment. Pop on decel is typically a lean condition at closed throttle. The trim screw will likely help, but for a precise fix the PCIII is it, not including everything else it will do for you. Can get you one if/when you are ready, contact me direct or see the main page of GuzziTech.com

I don't know nuthin' about the FI models, but with carb models, popping on overrun usually meant a vacuum leak somewhere, found by smearing all vacuum line junctions and around the manifolds with a thin solution of liquid soap, and checking for bubbles. Some people use WD40 or equivalent, but I never liked using flammables around a manifold. Use this antediluvian advice freely.
