This is about my V7C but I'm posting here as I don't think it's specific to small blocks.

The handbook says the final drive oil should be "AGIP gear MG 85w140". As far as I can see the "MG" isn't a general grade for gear oil, it's specific to AGIP and Moto Guzzi! http://www.americanagip.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=33 The AGIP web site for the UK doesn't even list this oil so far as I can see. It's easy to buy stufff in bottles labelled "shaft drive oil", but that seems to be 80w90.

From an old sales receipt (from my local Guzzi dealer, sadly out of business) I see he supplied "EP 85w140". Brand was Rock Oil. Can I assume anything that says EP on the label (and the right weight, obviously) will be correct?

What you need is a fully synthetic 80/85W-140 HYPOID oil, grade GL5.
Obtianable in different brands. I can easily get Castrol, so that's the one I use.

And if you can't buy less than 15 liters, go for another brand; they will last for 88 replacements, or 660000 km, so it's a lifetime+ supply.

Thanks for the replies (and sorry it took me a while to catch up).

Clearly you are both more knowledgeable than me, but unfortunately you are contradicting each other. You can buy EP 85w140 hypoid gear oil from (say) Rock Oil and it is GL4, not GL5. Rock Oil sell a GL5 rated 85w140, but is is not EP (think they call it SD).

I since found out that Moto World sell the Agip MG 85w140 oil in the UK, but it is £20 a litre! It is also possible to buy it for about £10 a litre from a german ebay seller, but postage costs another £10, so that works out at £20 as well. I have also been recommended Redline Heavy Shock Proof Gear Oil (75w140, fully syntheic, GL5), available in the UK from Opie Oils, which is also about £20 (incl. postage an Guzzi Club discount).

I don't suppose the cost is an issue though, if I use about 180ml a year!

Cheapest way to go is probably to order the Agip oil plus enough of the recommended Agip oils for a couple of sump & gearbox oil changes, from the guy on ebay (£10 postage is a flat rate so it's good value if I buy about 8-9 litres of oil!)

Hi

I just put Millers CRX fully synthetic 75w90 in my Breva1100, though I struggled to find a local supplier. Got a litre for £12 from a UK dealer via EBAY and was able to refill the gearbox and final drive with one bottle. I saved the +50% mail costs by combining with 5 litres of engine oil.

Just looked on EBAY and Millers CRX in 75w140 spec is available as well.

Oils one of those subjective things and theres been plenty of threads discussing GL4/5. Check out the Millers website for the specs(millersoils.net) I've used Millers diesel oil products for years.

If you can get the Castrol SAF-XJ 75W-140, it's both GL 5 and EP.

Art; smallblocks and bigblocks do use different transmission oils for the rear transmission.
