Just finished the first service of the 2007 Norge with 800 miles on the clock. Highlights were the valve adjustment, steering head adjustment, oil change and throttle body sinc. All valves were somewhat loose as compared to my preferred 6 & 8. Steering head was loose enough to make noise and vibrate under braking. Curiously, this didn’t cause any handling issues like wobbling. I filtered drained tranny and final drive oil through a white cotton cloth. Only transmission had any swarf at all, and not much there either. Throttle bodies were significantly out of sinc as found, even though I’d done this as soon as I got the bike home when new. This would suggest just how far out of adjustment the valves were. Took 4 hrs. just to remove and replace plastic this first time but this will come down with experience. $82 for 5 liters of oil and 2 valve cover gaskets.

Hi Cheese,

Setting those valves at 0.006 and 0.008 inch is a little wide. The specification is 0.004 and 0.006 inch (0.1 and 0.15mm).

Graham, I don't yet have VDSTS, but plan on checking this ASAP. John, You are correct that 6 & 8 is somewhat loose. What I do, and it's probably different from most, is to rotate through the valve closed section of the cam while checking with feeler for the spot with the most clearance, which is typically not right at TDC. This is where I make my adjustment and valves are nice and quiet.

Another point I forgot to mention, the Carc would take only 340cc of lubricant after draining for 1/2 hour. Filled to the bottom of the filler hole.

And yet another thing..
Have found another interesting phenomena while adjusting throttle body sinc. Firstly, I’ve not adjusted TPS as yet, but plan to as soon as I can accumulate the cash for the VDSTS. Now for the curiosity. It appears as though I can “bias” the adjustment of throttle linkage so either left or right TB air bypass will be effective to fine tune the mercury columns. In other words, With both air bypass screws closed, the linkage can be positioned so the left bypass will need to be opened for best balance, or the linkage can be set so the right bypass needs to open for best balance. My question: Is there any difference? Seems to me with the TPS mounted on the right hand TB, the “bias” might be important for achieving good idle mixture. On my Norge, I noticed after setting sinc with right side bleed slightly open, the right side exhaust pipe was 80 degrees F higher than the left. I then re-adjusted so the left bleed was slightly open and here, both pipes were within 15 degrees.

It's not a good idea at all to alter the vacuum balance without being able to reset the TPS at the same time. Any movement of the linkage rod (left end) adjuster screw will upset the TPS setting.

However, the air bleeds do not affect the TPS setting so it's OK to play with them to achieve the best idle. Both screws either should be closed or just one slightly open.

Thanks for that Graham! Perhaps this is the reason for the temp. variation. VDSTS ASAP.
