Found in oil pan - mystery

another update - bike still not usable. Did not replace oil pump as none available + existing just did not show signs of any wear. Waited about 3.5 months for gaskets to arrive from Italy, bike back together now and same problem. Through extensive research I have concluded that the mystery piece found in oil pan is part of the RH chain tensioner. Anyone know what the steps are to replace a chain tensioner?

I remember that replacing the alternator was a significant job and if I'm correct the cam chain is under another cover (under the alternator cover). Others that may have done the job might pipe in but I'm pretty sure it's no small afternoon job. Peter

That almost sounds like the alternator belt tensioner position :) . Peter
That's in front in the front cover. Back side of cyl where timing chain runs and on top of block.
From memory,
Look in the service manual. Left hand is cyl & head removal if I remember correct.

@V700Steve - for the RH side, are you saying I can replace the chain tensioner by simply removing the cap? I agree the service manual makes it look that way - the manual just does not discuss how to replace it, i guess the assumption would be that it slides out once plug is removed.

thanks gents - will update post once complete so others experiencing this don't make the mistake of thinking MG North America will be of any assistance and can hopfully learn from this post.

got the new RH chain tensioner finally - took almost 5 weeks, I guess another back order and a slow boat from Italy. Todd (or anyone) does it insert plunger end up towards plug or down away from the plug? Also, is there any prep to be one such as compressing and locking the plunger? Unfortunately the service manual is pretty vague on the install but it does look like plunger end is up towards the plug. Thanks in advance.

Next is to investigate how this broke off and made its way to oil pan. Hoping the shaft is still in place and easily pulls out.
