the other day i went to go for a ride on my sp, and it wouldnt start up, as i was cranking it over ,i smelled something electrical burning....so i stopped. well, it turns out it was coming from my dynaIII. somehow a wire came loose in the ignition (where the key is) and was touching another wire.
now, i get nothing, no spark from either plug.

so, im sure the dyna is fried, but what else do you think ill need to buy or check?
is there a cheaper dyna alternative?
is there anyway i can run my bike without it?

You have two choices, replace the dyna III or install points. Just check your circuits at the switch before you do either.

so i decided to go with the points, mostly because im broke!
what i dont have is the points plate. ive asked guzzino if they had one, they said they did but were leaving and to get back to them last tuesday, and when i did i got an auto-response, and theyve yet to get back to me.
anywhere else sell a new or used one? my searches i getting me no where.

ive sent them a email but havent heard anything back yet. so we'll see.

Just curious but how can you be sure the Dyna is fried? If there was a loose wire at the ignition that shorted to something I don't see how that would damage the dyna.

I certainly do see how that could blow the fuse that powers the dyna or even burns the wire that powers the dyna but it's hard to see how it would damage the dyna itself.

I would look closely at the circuit that powers the coils and likely the Dyna also. You may find no power anywhere.

If you do have power at the coils and the dyna gets it's power from there, I would also cut off the slip on terminal on the dyna hot lead and replace it. Many of them used a crappy two piece terminal that can visually look fine and pass no current. Same is true for the dyna ground connector.

well im preety sure thats what it is. the thing somked like it was on fire, and is leaking that transformer lookin brown juice. then nothing works after that so. but i will check other stuff.

I have an LM IV points distributor, I was hanging on to it for a spare, Make offer and we will see what comes of it. I don't know if would work in your bike or not.

So the brown goo was coming out of the dyna?

Wow, Takes some serious current to do that kind of thing and I would expect a fuse to blow in that case. When you get it sorted out, I'd make sure you have stuff properly fused.

Good luck with the plate and let us know how it comes out.

im not sure, im sure someone on here will know.
if it does fit all i really need is the plate, i have the rest of the parts shipping out to me right now.
you can pm a price for all of it and a price for the plate alone if youd like.

yah, the brown goo was coming out of it. weeping out of the holes that you bolt the straps to.
and if youve ever smelled that stuff you know its nasty, its not good, and not to get it on you..... unless you want to smell like burning electrical for a few days..hehe. when i check the power, everything was on, just no spark at the plugs.

i know stuff isnt properly fused on it, cause nothing ever blows fuses, its preety rigged and was like that when i baught it.
ill for sure let you guys know.

Yo!

I have a "spare" Dyna III controller. If ya wanna try it out lemme know and I'll ship it to ya.

Alex

sh!T!
i baught one.... and its already here and installed. just a few days late! hehe, storry of my life.

well....the bike starts up, runs for about a minute then dies. batterys fine, pumpin out 12v so i dunno. im done out there in the garage for today, ill get back on it tommorow.

That's why I have a "spare." I didn't know if my Ebay Special was failing so I bought a new one.

Should buy stock in Dyna eh?

maybe we all should! seems like they preety much got the ignition market for these bike cornered. haha.

well, after the drama i had NOT getting all the points parts i needed to get out of this drama cheap i ended up just buying the damn dyna. MG Cycle told me that all i needed to go back to points was the plate, condensors, and points....but left out the center deal cam or whatever it is called that actually touches the points. which, ok, whatever..... i didnt get those parts when i bought the bike, they dont know that.

well i had made a points plate, got it all preety, then figured out the one that is used for the dyna is way to big...points wont even fit, let alone work. so like i said, just bit the bullet and bought the dyna.
so yesterday finally got the bike running! seems like it runs alot better also. its been a steep learning curve for sure, but, with your guys' help , i got it figured out. thanks.
hopefully ill never have to touch that damn thing again!
