Frustrated with VDSTS install

To begin - when I received my VDSTS from Todd I learned that because my XP laptop had no serial port I would have to purchase a serial to USB adapter. I'm familiar with then and use in my work.
Got the recommended adaptor in installed it. I hooked the bike to the cable as instructed and nothing. Got error messages indicating that I needed to connect to the bike's data port (already done).Next message was to clip the two power clips to the battery (did in the right order red=red black=black. Amd now it still asks for setting of the commumicatiom port, It is 5 amd set it at that value.
So now that i have all connected properly I should be good to go, ha! Learned that i needed to install the USB 2.0 software for the adapter and configure it which I did - FAILURE!

Uninstalled it all and tried again - same result with the same three "error:" messages.

Emailed Todd and he recommended speaking with TR - I haven't yet - had another option...Installed it on an older laptop that had a serial port and still running the approved win 98. Install went well and I was hoping for success having left the aftermarket adapter left out of the equation.

Hooked it all up - bike com port / clips to battery and to the computer. Oh, baby it'll work now!!! NOPE ! Same error messages set port (did) connect to communication port (done) and clip to battery (done).

So I suspect one of two scenarios, the first being me missing some step, but deep down I'm thinking I may have a defective unit.

Anybody experience a similar frustration on install and if corrected - what fixed it. I'd like to work thru the install if possible rather than ask for a replacement.

Any and all thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks.
Walt

Hi Walt, sorry for the troubles... I would definitely get Giamberto on the line tomorrow. He will tell you if something is amiss on his side.

I've only heard of one kit being defective because of the wiring in one of the plugs... someone here who repaired it themselves.

Please keep me posted.

I too had the same problem. Come to find out what I thought was the communication port on the bike was not. There are 2 plugs under the seat that will plug in to the VDSTS plug. The one with all the shielding around it is not the plug to use. It is the one with the 3 small wires going into the plug. Keep us posted
