I'm wanting to replace my stock timing cover on my '81 G5 with one that doesn't have the tach drive cable coming through it. Just for a cleaner look. Will the cover from a late '80's to early '90's fit my engine?

Yes, it will bolt up. You may need to check seal size based on alt rotor on doner motor. While off put a proper chain tensioner on the timing chain.

That era of timing cover will still have a "bump" on it where the tach drive would be, it's just not machined for the drive. That's how the timing cover of my '90 Cal III is. The same thing could be achieved by removing the drive and plugging the hole.

I'm looking at one that came off a California III and it's smooth so I think it will work. The difference looks to be the space for the ignition appears smaller than on my cover. I'm going with electronic ignition so I think it should still work. Thanks for the feedback guys.

I replaced my Cal2 100K mi ago with the stock small flapper spring model and has worked fine. It was better than the slide across to max one I adjusted on my LM3 at 15K mi. Now w/50K mi it slaps the case. To be fixed at a later date w/I put it back on road from a wreck in 07. What ever you decide better than nothing or stock stuff. I always thought the bow type was over kill & may cause chain stretch. Your bike, they all work. Most put in the bow type.

"Space for the ignition". The ignition is all in the "distributor", which is up to the rear of the right cylinder, nothing on the timing cover. There's only the alternator, and that is the same physical size on all Tontis.
