Lately, I've been noticing that when I am in 1st gear and press my gear lever down further, the readout changes to 2nd. Release the gear lever and the readout would return to normal. Now occasionally, I'm noticing that it will display 2nd when it's moving along in 1st, and my boot is away from the lever.

I'm hoping (dreaming?) that it's something simple, like the gear position sensor (part #857265) is a little loose in its mountings. But I'm having difficulty in physically locating it, it looks to me that it's on the rear of the gearbox. I tried removing the starter motor, but found nothing, next step is to remove the battery and perhaps the airbox to see if I can locate it.

Anyone experienced the same issue or been down in these parts of the woods? Taking the motor and gearbox out would be a major operation I'm not keen to attempt.

To the left of where the driveshaft meets the transmission is the gear sensor. I included a picture that shows it's location, and some info that you can use to determine if the switch is good or bad. The picture that shows the sensor seems to be rolled 90 degrees to the left. Hope this helps......

Thanks. I did find these diagrams, but physically getting at the sensor doesn't look easy. Problem has gone away for now, but no doubt it will return. May turn it into a winter project, I'm planning to do a repaint and will need to remove the rear fender, which might reveal something.
Thanks for your post.

Wow, glad I checked here - I'm experiencing the same thing now; for the past couple of months, actually.
Like you, I suspect the gear indicator sensor may need a physical adjustment.
The question becomes, how DIY-friendly is it to fix? Or, should I leave this to the dealer to address and take the wallet gouging?

Do you really need the bike to tell you which gear you are in?
I'd ignore it especially if it is costly or a PITA to fix.

My Victory has an "intuitive" gear indicator: it's recommends which gear it thinks you should be in.
I ignore that one, just don't need the bike to tell me which gear I'm in or when to shift.

I'm of the same thought: ignore the nuisance. I figure, as long as it doesn't impact fuel ratios or some other performance capability then it can show whatever it wants.
